Job summary

High Country Line Construction is seeking a T&D Estimator I to prepare cost estimates for transmission, distribution and substation projects. This role supports achieving profitability and growth by leveraging bid history, scheduling, and vendor pricing.

Travel for site visits and pre-bid meetings may be required. The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of estimating or construction experience, with a strong grasp of electrical systems and proficient MS Office skills.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of estimating experience or relevant construction experience.
  • Proficient in analyzing construction and electrical drawings to estimate accurately.
  • Knowledgeable of electrical materials and installation methods.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks under time pressure.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and a team player.
  • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Complete cost estimates for transmission, distribution and substation projects.
  • Develop complex estimates with minor errors/omissions.
  • Use historical data to establish production assumptions.
  • Track project history for up-to-date hours and costs.
  • Attend field walks and pre-bid meetings to determine constructability.
  • Solicit material pricing and subcontractor proposals for RFQ/RFPs.
  • Prepare the commercial aspects of proposals and change orders.
  • Create and maintain construction schedules.
  • Participate in bid reviews and project close-out discussions.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The T&D Estimator I is an integral part of the electrical construction process and ensures competitiveness, profitability, and growth. The T&D Estimator I is responsible for preparing cost estimates for various transmission, distribution and substation electrical construction projects.

Essential Functions
  • Complete cost estimates for assigned projects, with definable work tasks for transmission, distribution and substation projects
  • Develop complex estimates with minor errors/omissions
  • Utilize previous work/bidding history to establish production assumptions
  • Track and compare project histories to produce up to date man hours and cost
  • Plan and execute work while meeting customer defined submission deadlines
  • Schedule and attend field job walk with customer, subcontractor, and construction personnel to determine constructability requirements
  • Attend on site pre-bid meetings and perform job site visits.
  • Field job walks and pre-bid meeting may require travel/overnight stays
  • Identify qualified suppliers/subcontractors
  • Perform accurate material takeoffs to supply to vendor for pricing
  • Solicit material vendor pricing and subcontractor proposals, including assembly and distribution of project documentation into RFQ/RFP packages
  • Prepare commercial aspects of proposals, including work plans, clarifications/exceptions, etc.
  • Compare various project documents for accuracy and consistency
  • Perform operational contract redlines and coordinate with the legal department, and understand how contractual items affect the bid/work
  • Prepare billing per customer requirements, and execute change orders
  • Create/utilize a construction schedule
  • Participate in job close-out meetings at the end of a project to close any loops in the estimating process
  • Participate in estimate review process with internal and external stake holders
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Essential functions of this position are to be performed in a Company-designated office or field location

ABOUT YOU
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of estimating experience or relevant construction experience
Preferred Education
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or similar field; relevant experience considered in lieu of degree
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Proficient in analyzing construction and electrical drawings to accurately formulate an estimate
  • Knowledgeable of electrical materials and methods of installation
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications
