Job summary

Matrix PDM Engineering in Pittsburgh, PA seeks an Estimator I to develop project cost estimates, including materials, labor, equipment, and tooling, and to update costs as scope changes occur.

The successful candidate will apply an engineering background to interpret technical information, prepare accurate estimates across multiple disciplines, and support the engineering division with well- organized data. Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field; experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Entry level with 0–2 years of field or office experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with EPC, fabrication, construction and commissioning terminology.
  • Strong math, communication, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare estimates by material takeoffs for piping, structural steel, and electrical.
  • Enter items into estimating software under guidance of senior estimators.
  • Solicit subcontract and vendor pricing following company structure.
  • Attend site visits as directed.
  • Support safety and ethics programs as part of daily duties.

Job description

Job Summary

An Estimator I is responsible for collecting data and developing project cost estimates, including raw materials, labor, equipment, and tooling to ensure estimates are accurate. Updates costs as necessary based on new information and project scope changes.

This role will support the Engineering division with estimates that need to be organized to meet the Company's and clients' expected structure. The successful candidate will continue to apply their engineering degree by interpreting technical information, evaluating project requirements, and developing accurate cost estimates. The preferred location for this role is Pittsburgh, PA.

Essential Functions
  • Actively supports the Company's commitment to safety and its "Core Values."

  • Maintains quality service by following the standard of ethics and integrity in company policy and ensures that company information and information entrusted to us by our clients is kept with the appropriate level of confidentiality.
  • Prepares estimates by assessing and calculating material takeoffs for piping, structural steel and electrical.
  • Prepares material takeoffs under the guidance of a more experienced estimator (Estimator II or higher).
  • Enters items into estimating software under the guidance of a more experienced estimator (Estimator II or higher).
  • Solicits subcontract and vendor pricing utilizing uniform corporate structure under the guidance of a more experienced estimator (Estimator II or higher).
  • Prepares work to be accomplished by organizing and gathering information for the estimate in a manner required to meet the needs of the project.
  • Performs takeoffs, estimate entry and vendor/subcontractor packages for multiple disciplines based on the needs of projects as assigned and directed by a senior Estimator/Manager.
  • Attends site visits as directed and with the oversight of more experienced personnel on the site visit.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (or related field) required; equivalent combination of education/experience in lieu of degree could be considered.
  • Entry level position: 0 - 2 years of appropriate field and/or office experience preferred. Field experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Engineering, Procurement, Fabrication, Construction and Commissioning work and terminology.
  • Good basic mathematical comprehension.
  • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated enthusiastic team player willing to work with others and adopt new ideas and methods.
  • Good computer skills including an operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with estimating software and database applications a plus.
  • Project scheduling software (MS Project or Primavera) a plus.
  • Interacts with individuals at all organizational levels in professional manner.
  • Occasional travel and extended workdays may be required.
