Job summary

Allegheny Millwork is seeking a Millwork Estimator to prepare accurate project estimates by reviewing bid documents, performing detailed takeoffs, and coordinating with vendors and internal teams.

The role supports pre- and post-bid efforts, including pricing, clarifications, and project handoffs. Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills are essential to success in this remote salaried position.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of estimating experience in millwork, cabinetry, or commercial construction.
  • Ability to review bid documents and perform detailed takeoffs per SOPs.
  • Knowledge of AWI standards and millwork fabrication methods.
  • Understanding of AWI standards and millwork practices.
  • Ability to read construction documents and drawings.
  • Familiarity with FSC/LEED sustainability standards.
  • Experience with digital takeoff and estimating software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Review contract bid documents and determine project scope.
  • Perform detailed material takeoffs and price with internal/external sources.
  • Coordinate with project management, production, and other departments on bid items.
  • Prepare final bid pricing including materials, production, shipping, and related costs.
  • Communicate with customers to address RFIs and clarifications.
  • Attend handoff meetings and ensure clear information transfer.

Job description

Summary

The Millwork Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive project estimates by reviewing bid documents, performing detailed takeoffs, and coordinating with vendors and internal teams. This role ensures all aspects of the bidding process align with company standards and project requirements. The Estimator supports both pre- and post-bid efforts, including pricing, clarifications, and project handoffs. Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills are essential to success in this role.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Review, interpret, and thoroughly understand all contract bid documents.
  • Determine project scope and perform accurate, detailed material takeoffs in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Obtain accurate material pricing and vendor quotes by leveraging both internal databases and external sources.
  • Collaborate with project management, production, and other departments to ensure bid items are constructible and manufacturable within the awarded budget.
  • Calculate final proposed bid pricing by compiling all costs, including materials, production, shipping, and other related expenses.
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with customers to address RFIs, clarifications, and scope-related questions.
  • Provide timely and accurate responses to internal and customer inquiries regarding takeoffs and scope of work.
  • Attend required project handoff meetings upon bid acceptance to ensure effective information transfer and alignment across departments.
  • Present all necessary documentation and details during handoff meetings, including finalized bid information and supporting materials.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and vendors to ensure high‑quality proposals and pricing.
  • Organize and distribute all bidding documents—such as specifications, drawings, and product lists—to appropriate vendors for pricing.
  • Follow up with trade contractors and suppliers to ensure timely receipt of bids.
  • Present and explain final bids to internal teams and stakeholders for review prior to submission.
  • Adhere to all bid‑related deadlines and ensure timely completion of assigned estimating tasks.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with sales team members and customers throughout the bidding and project lifecycle.
  • This is a remote salaried position. You must have sufficient and compatible space and work environment.
  • Standard work hours are 7:00AM – 5:00PM EST Monday – Friday with extended hours as required to meet deadlines.
Qualifications & Skill
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and document management software, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam, and similar tools.
  • In‑depth knowledge of millwork and cabinetry materials, including wood species, veneers, core materials, moldings, finishes, laminates, solid surfaces, hardware, stone, glass, and ornamental metals.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating with sales teams and customers to develop and maintain a strong client base.
  • Thorough understanding of custom commercial architectural millwork practices and familiarity with AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute) standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret a wide range of construction documents, specifications, and industry‑related standards.
  • Expert knowledge of architectural millwork fabrication methods, materials, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with sustainability standards such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
  • Experience using digital takeoff and INNERGY estimating software is a plus.
Education & Experience
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in construction management, Architecture, Engineering, Drafting/Design, or a related field (preferred).
  • A high school diploma or GED with relevant technical training and extensive experience may be acceptable.
  • Coursework or certifications in estimating, blueprint reading, or CAD are beneficial.
  • 5+ years of estimating experience in the millwork, cabinetry, or commercial construction industry.

  • Hearing: The employee must have the ability to hear sufficiently to communicate effectively and respond to safety signals and warnings in a work environment.
  • Work Environment: The employee may be exposed to moderate noise levels, hazardous materials, and varying weather conditions depending on the job site.
  • Travel: Require to travel up to 20% of the time for training opportunities or service job sites.
