Position Summary

The Esthetician Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality classroom, laboratory, and hands-on clinical instruction to students enrolled in Milan Institute's Esthetician program.

This position prepares students for successful careers in the esthetics industry by teaching the technical knowledge, practical skills, safety and sanitation standards, professional behaviors, and customer-service skills required of entry-level estheticians. The Esthetician Instructor also supports students in meeting program completion requirements and preparing for applicable state licensure examinations.

• Deliver classroom, laboratory, and hands-on clinical instruction in accordance with the approved curriculum, lesson plans, course objectives, and established academic schedules.
• Provide instruction in applicable esthetics topics, which may include:

Hands-On & Student Clinic Instruction

• Supervise students performing esthetic services in laboratory and student clinic environments.
• Demonstrate proper procedures before students perform new or unfamiliar techniques.
• Observe student services and provide immediate coaching and corrective instruction when necessary.
• Ensure students follow required sanitation, disinfection, infection-control, and safety procedures.
• Ensure students properly prepare and maintain treatment rooms, workstations, equipment, implements, and supplies.
• Monitor students' client consultations, skin analyses, service selections, treatment procedures, and post-service recommendations.
• Ensure students recognize contraindications and understand when a service should not be performed.
• Promote professional customer service and appropriate student-client interactions.
• Ensure students perform only services permitted by the curriculum, institutional policy, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Intervene immediately when a student practice could compromise client, student, or employee safety.

Student Learning & Academic Progress

• Monitor student attendance, academic performance, practical skill development, and overall progress.
• Evaluate student competency through written examinations, practical demonstrations, assignments, projects, and other approved assessment methods.
• Accurately grade and document student work within established timelines.
• Identify students who are struggling academically or practically and provide appropriate coaching and instructional support.
• Develop or participate in academic improvement plans as required.
• Provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback to students.
• Encourage students to take ownership of their attendance, academic progress, professional development, and program completion.
• Communicate significant student concerns to Education leadership in a timely manner.
• Support student retention through proactive engagement, coaching, and early intervention.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while supporting students through academic challenges.

Student Professional Development

• Model professional conduct, appearance, communication, and customer service.
• Reinforce expectations regarding attendance, punctuality, professionalism, accountability, and workplace behavior.
• Coach students on client consultation, communication, service execution, rebooking, retail recommendations, and client retention.
• Help students develop the confidence, technical skills, and professional behaviors expected by employers.
• Incorporate employability and career-readiness skills into instruction.
• Encourage students to build appropriate speed, efficiency, accuracy, and service quality as their skills develop.
• Support Career Services initiatives and employment preparation activities.
• Encourage students to complete applicable licensure requirements promptly following graduation.

Licensure Preparation

• Prepare students for applicable written and/or practical state licensure examinations.
• Incorporate state law, sanitation, safety, theory, and practical examination concepts into instruction.
• Provide review activities and additional instructional support when appropriate.
• Reinforce the importance of completing licensure requirements following graduation.
• Support institutional efforts to achieve strong graduate licensure outcomes.

Classroom & Clinic Management

• Maintain an organized, professional, engaging, and student-focused learning environment.
• Establish clear classroom and clinic expectations and consistently reinforce them.
• Maintain appropriate classroom management and address disruptive or unprofessional student behavior.
• Ensure students remain actively engaged in educational activities during scheduled instructional time.
• Maintain appropriate control and accountability for products, supplies, tools, equipment, and student clinic materials.
• Ensure treatment areas, classrooms, laboratories, and clinic spaces remain clean, sanitary, safe, and professional.
• Monitor product usage and help minimize unnecessary waste.
• Promptly report equipment problems, supply needs, safety concerns, or facility issues.
• Follow established procedures for student salon/clinic services and product use.

Student Records & Compliance

• Maintain accurate and timely attendance, grades, practical requirements, evaluations, and other required student records.
• Complete required documentation within established deadlines.
• Review student progress and identify missing academic or practical requirements.
• Maintain documentation supporting student coaching, academic interventions, and other required educational activities.
• Follow institutional policies and procedures and applicable accreditation, state, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain student confidentiality and comply with FERPA requirements.
• Participate in accreditation visits, regulatory reviews, audits, and other compliance activities as required.
• Immediately communicate potential compliance concerns to Education or campus leadership.

Faculty & Campus Responsibilities

• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, training, orientations, graduations, student events, and other campus activities as required.
• Collaborate with other instructors to maintain consistency in curriculum delivery and student expectations.
• Work collaboratively with Education leadership, Student Services, Registrar, Financial Aid, Career Services, and campus leadership to support student success.
• Participate in curriculum reviews and instructional improvement initiatives.
• Maintain required professional licenses, certifications, and continuing education.
• Remain current with institutional policies, procedures, and instructional expectations.
• Maintain professional communication and productive working relationships with students and employees.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.

Certification & Licensing

• Must hold and maintain a current Esthetician license, Instructor license, or other professional credential required by the state in which instruction is provided.
• Must maintain all continuing education and renewal requirements associated with required professional credentials.
• Instructor licensure or certification must be obtained and maintained when required by applicable state law.
• Additional certifications relevant to esthetics services or equipment are preferred.

The Esthetician Instructor regularly stands and walks for extended periods while providing classroom, laboratory, and clinic instruction. The position requires frequent bending, reaching, positioning, and use of the hands and fingers to demonstrate esthetic techniques and operate tools and equipment.

The employee must be able to observe student services closely and safely demonstrate esthetic procedures and equipment.

The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move supplies, products, equipment, or other materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

The position involves regular exposure to esthetic products, disinfectants, skincare products, wax, cosmetics, and equipment commonly used in an esthetics educational and clinical environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Esthetician Instructor provides direct instructional supervision of students while participating in classroom, laboratory, and student clinic activities.

The position does not have formal supervisory authority over employees unless separately assigned in writing.
