Job summary

WSP USA is seeking an ESSP Senior Lead Protection Engineer to join our growing team. The role involves design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for bulk power equipment, including substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, and distribution systems.

You can work from multiple offices or remotely within the United States. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in protective relaying, coordinated with SCADA, and a PE license.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) required.
  • 12+ years of post-education experience in protective relaying for power generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability (to obtain one).
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to policies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead teams on client projects to meet scope, schedule, and budget; provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Develop protection philosophy, relay settings, and SCADA integration.
  • Perform protection analyses: short circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, and NERC compliance.
  • Coordinate data acquisition with limited onsite visits and discuss project specifics at client-appropriate technical level.
  • Adhere to IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards and manage project priorities.

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an ESSP Senior Lead Protection Engineer for our Bosie, ID office. Candidates for our Orlando, FL; Freeport, ME; Syracuse, NY; Charlotte, NC; Overland Park, KS; and Richmond, VA offices will also be considered. The ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location in the United States will be considered (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located). Be involved in projects with our Electrical Studies, SCADA, and Protection (ESSP) team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.

The successful applicant will have a direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system. This includes the protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, industrial, and distribution systems.

Your Impact

Candidates for this role will have extensive knowledge, proven experience, and advanced expertise with many of the items listed below. However, mastery of all these technical areas is not required. The successful candidate will be responsible for using their extensive knowledge and expertise to develop new clients, make strategic decisions, and lead projects and teams.

  • Protective Relaying: Symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and integration with SCADA systems.
  • Protection Analyses: Electrical model development, short circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, NERC compliance, and event analysis
  • Leadership: Lead teams on client projects to meet the scope, schedule, and budget. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Data Acquisition: Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and able to discuss project specifics at appropriate technical level for clients.
  • Industry Standards: Working knowledge or awareness of applicable industry practices for protection as outlined in IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards.
  • Organized: Flexibility to support a variety of project schedules to meet client needs and able to prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Applicable software: AcSELeratorQuickset, GEEnervista, ASPENOneliner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, RSCAD
  • Applicable hardware: SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, Beckwith, RTDS
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited).
  • 12+ years of relevant post education experience as an electrical engineer executing deliverables for Protective Relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a proven history of leading and completing similar projects in a consulting environment.
  • Preference may be given to engineers with commissioning and testing experience, or strong skills in protecting equipment at high voltages (69kV and higher).
  • Preference is also given to applicants with experience mentoring others and a willingness to do so.

Compensation

Expected Salary (New York only): $153,600yr - $260,200yr

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
