North East Carolina Preparatory in Tarboro, NC seeks an ESL Specialist to provide English language instruction and intervention for K-12 students and to support Dual Language Classrooms under the supervision of the principal.

The role includes coordinating with Lead Teachers, conducting screenings and assessments, and maintaining accurate records in alignment with NC and WIDA standards. A four-year degree and NC teaching license are required.

  • Valid NC teaching license/certificate, or be able to obtain such.
  • Prior experience working with English Learner students and/or working in bilingual education.

Job Description

POSITION: English as a Second Language Specialist

SALARY GRADE: School Salary Schedule

NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this position provides support and direct instruction to English Learner Students and supports instruction in the Dual Language Program Classrooms. A wide variety of tasks are performed in the teaching-learning process for students as well as advisory support for the NECP Instructional Staff. An ESL Specialist performs his/her duties under the supervision of, and reports to, the principal and/or his/her designee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Provides English Language Instruction and Intervention for student in the ESL Program, K-12
  • Assists the Lead Teachers of Dual Language Classes as assigned by the Program Coordinator
  • Completes necessary training to provide screening and evaluative assessments
  • Supports the program of study, employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom performance and behavior
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives aligned with the NC & WIDA standards.
  • Assists in diagnosing the learning disabilities of students, with the assistance of district specialists
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares reports as needed
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or his/her designee

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and the general public consistent with the duties of this position
  • PREFERRED – Bilingual and Biliterate capability: English-Spanish

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Leadership – The employee in this position is motivated to learn and apply administrative leadership responsibilities assigned to the ESL Program

Language Skills – Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills - Ability to work with fundamental mathematical concepts such as basic algebraic expressions, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills - Familiarity with basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.

Work Environment - The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee may encounter, and include a noise level that is usually moderate to loud. The employee continuously interacts with the public and staff. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Other – Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to lift files and paper. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
