Job summary

World Relief is seeking an ESL Program Assistant to support student enrollments, pretesting, attendance tracking, in-class assistance, posttesting, and volunteer management. You will aid learners from diverse backgrounds to build confidence in English and adapt to life in America.

This part-time role (24 hours/week) features a hybrid schedule with in-office days and up to one remote day per week; occasional travel to Thurston/Whatcom counties may be required.

Qualifications

  • Mature and personal Christian faith.
  • Able to affirm World Relief's Core Beliefs and faith statements.
  • Strong written and oral English communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete intakes and enrollment paperwork with new students.
  • Lead or co-lead pretesting sessions for new students.
  • Assist instructors with student posttesting.
  • Serve as a floating class assistant in classrooms where extra support is needed.
  • Occasionally substitute teach ESL classes with provided plans.
  • Reach out to students having challenges to provide support or referrals.
  • Assist instructors to collect student feedback about the program.
  • Occasionally provide 1:1 tutoring for students with unique needs.
  • Maintain student and volunteer records confidentially (attendance, testing, enrollment).
  • Participate in team meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain communication with staff to coordinate services to clients.
  • Assist with team projects and related tasks.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

POSITION SUMMARY

The ESL Program Assistant will assist our ESL team with student enrollments, pretesting, attendance tracking, in-class assistance, posttesting, and volunteer management. They will also support students who need extra help adjusting to the classes or referrals for other services. As part of our ESL team, the ESL Program Assistant will partner with learners from many different ethnic, religious, linguistic, and educational backgrounds to build their confidence in English communication and empower them to function and thrive in their new American context.

This is a part-time position for 24 hours per week. Hybrid Schedule: Primarily in-office Thursdays (and some Wednesdays), with up to 1 remote day per week. However, must be available to come into the office if needed.

  • Complete intakes and enrollment paperwork with new students.

  • Reach out to students who are having challenges participating in classes to understand their needs and provide support or referrals.
  • Assist instructors to collect student feedback about the program.
  • Occasionally provide 1:1 tutoring for students with unique needs.
  • Maintain student and volunteer records in an organized and confidential manner, including attendance, testing records, and enrollment information.
  • Participate in team meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain close communication with other staff in order to coordinate effective service to clients.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Valid driver's license, access to reliable vehicle and ability to pass MVR standards.
  • Flexibility to occasionally travel to Thurston County office or Whatcom County office.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple duties.
  • Flexibility, initiative, and a desire to learn.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of a second language a plus, especially French, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, or Somali.
  • Experience learning English as an additional language a plus.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge, including MS Office.
  • Prior experience with ESL programs preferred.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural, social service setting highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with refugee resettlement process very helpful.
