Job Summary
Provide ESL / Family Literacy instruction and assessment tailored to each student’s individual academic needs. Offer instruction to prepare at‑risk students and displaced workers for higher education and/or entry to the job market. Deliver a self‑paced program that facilitates learning of English language skills—grammar, writing, reading, speaking, listening, pronunciation, and accent reduction—while enhancing students’ academic capacities. Maintain student portfolios, hold conferences, accurately document attendance and progress, and introduce American civic values, culture, and customs to newly arrived U.S. residents. Perform required part‑time faculty responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Providing ELA instruction for College and Career Readiness students.
- Developing course outlines/lesson plans in accordance with NC Content Standards and preparing daily lesson guides for regular or substitute instruction.
- Securing educational resources (textbooks, software, equipment, etc.) to support diverse adult learning styles.
- Submitting a list of needed supplies/materials for the classroom to the coordinator.
- Assessing students and planning their individual study programs.
- Maintaining files documenting student progress.
- Tracking student hours to post test results and meet performance measures.
- Completing and submitting state-required data forms (LEIS) to the CCR Data Coordinator.
- Submitting original pay and attendance sheets to the Chief HSE Examiner/AHS Coordinator each month for payment.
- Entering daily student hours through Self‑Service to track attendance.
- Following up on unplaced or early‑leaving students.
- Attending staff meetings, in‑service sessions, workshops, conferences, and other development activities as requested.
- Participating in college planning and serving on committees.
- Completing twelve hours of professional development annually.
- Obtaining a CORE, ASE, ESOL, or STAR credential within two years of hire.
- Adhering to the College and Career Readiness Calendar.
- Performing additional duties as directed.
- Maintaining confidentiality of all student information.
- Keeping the work area clean and safe.

- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and write; respond to inquiries and complaints; and present information to students and staff.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply mathematical operations for tabulating student scores.
- Reasoning Ability: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret extensive information.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Established for each curriculum program (contact Division Chair or Dean for details).
- Other Skills and Abilities: Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the community college system.
Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Adult Education with teaching experience.
- ESL Certification and/or experience teaching English as a second language.
- Experience teaching English to speakers of other languages.
- Bilingual or some understanding of other languages.
- Teaching certificate if available or other helpful certifications.
Physical Demands
The employee regularly talks or hears, sits frequently, and occasionally stands, walks, uses hands, runs reach, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. Lifting up to 10± pounds occurs occasionally. Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment
The employee occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions. Noise levels are usually quiet.
