Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, or Automotive Technology.
  • Post-secondary training (≈30 credit hours, 1 school year) in auto/heavy equipment repair plus 1 year experience.
  • Two years of automotive or heavy equipment repair experience.
  • Pass CDL written exam before hire; obtain Class B CDL tanker endorsement with proper restrictions within 60 days.
  • Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire.
  • Complete work simulation and medical-physical examinations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair light vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Inspect, service, repair, overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drivetrains, differentials; hydraulic controls; tune motors; disassemble/reassemble equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, overhauls, and assemble automotive components such as alternators, distributors, starters.
  • Complete mandated fleet inspections and ensure OSHA standards compliance.
  • May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.

  • Maintains and performs basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Inspects, services, repairs, and overhauls transmissions, engines, clutches, drivelines, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies and ignition systems; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; tunes motors using standard testing equipment; dismantles, repairs, and reassembles air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders, and related equipment.
  • Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
  • Completes mandated fleet inspections and ensures all equipment meets OSHA standards and all repairs and modifications are done in accordance with operational specifications and safety standards.
  • May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, OR
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment-related repair (of at least 30 credit hours or one school year in duration) AND one year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, OR
  • Two years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
  • A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver's license (CDL) exam is required prior to the hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the Class B CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire into the position.
  • Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire into the position.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and medical-physical examination.

  • Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
