Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems, based in Somerville, MA, seeks an Equipment Specialist to support production process improvements and manufacturing efficiency. You will collaborate with manufacturing and equipment engineering teams to reduce downtime, improve quality, and shorten SPARC timelines.

The role requires hands-on electromechanical work, troubleshooting, and rapid prototyping using CAD/3D printing. You’ll write work instructions, monitor downtime, and help implement new techniques in a

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience with mechanical and electrical assembly.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency with hand tools.
• Electro-mechanical system troubleshooting.
• Proficiency with MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, and Visio.
• Commitment to safety and quality.
• Ability to identify business/process improvement opportunities and communicate them to team and management.

Responsibilities

• Brainstorm, trial, and implement continuous improvement projects to reduce build hours & defects.
• Work within a multi-disciplinary team of manufacturing engineers, equipment engineers, and technicians to develop and qualify new manufacturing techniques and processes.
• Document manufacturing systems downtime for frequency and duration. Troubleshoot and resolve downtime with a focus on continuous improvement.
• Design, build, and commission electro-mechanical equipment and tooling for process and/or efficiency improvements.
• Write and update process work instructions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve nonconformances and production blockers.
• Perform R&D and prototype hardware builds with minimal documentation and oversight. Use various mechanical and precision calibrated tools such as torque wrenches, micrometers, calipers, and hand tools.
• Execute rapid prototyping using CAD / 3D Printing / ordering machined components.
• Identify and address robot limit/excess travel issues; confidently use the pendant to safely reposition robots and make minor path adjustments with remote engineering support as needed.
• Determine root cause for failures and propose changes with engineers on the team.

Join the power movement as an Equipment Specialist

The Equipment Specialist is responsible for supporting implementation of production process improvements and manufacturing efficiency improvements. This role works collaboratively with the manufacturing and equipment engineering teams to identify, implement, and track the performance of equipment and process improvement activities to reduce equipment downtime and improve quality rates. The Equipment Specialist will also be the first tier of engineering support for production. The purpose of this role is to help the production team shorten the timeline to SPARC.

What you'll do:

What we're looking for:

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment


• Efficient use of hand tools


• Electro-mechanical system troubleshooting


• Proficiency with MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, and Visio


• Commitment to safety and quality

• Understanding of good wiring practices


• Ability to read schematics and troubleshoot PLC inputs/output/sensors with basic understanding of programming logic

Must-have requirements:

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally


• Perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, and sitting, for extended periods of time


• Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics


• Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call

$32 - $43 an hour

Salary range for this full-time position + equity + benefits

The actual salary will depend on level, location, qualifications, and experience. The range displayed on each job posting reflects new hire salaries for the position across all US locations.
