Qualifications

  • Requires one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment related to the assignment area.
  • Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (Class “A”) for the duration of the appointment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Airfield driving privileges for movement and non‑movement areas.
  • Compliance with the Drug‑Free Workplace Policy in accordance with the Federal Drug‑Free Workplace Act of 1988.
  • Completion of a ten (10) year work history verification and criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
  • Mandatory Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and Security Threat Assessment (STA) as required by the TSA.

Responsibilities

  • Transport construction equipment using lowbed semi‑trailer; operate tractor‑trailer and tandem trucks in local hauling tasks.
  • Load and unload vehicles as required; operate heavy‑duty road roller in resurfacing and roadway construction.
  • Operate front‑end loader or small tractor rigged with hydraulic loading lift and backhoe digging shovel.
  • Operate tractor and “bush hog” for mowing roadway shoulders and removing vegetation from drainage ditches.
  • Operate sweeper truck for cleaning roadways; may operate smaller earth‑moving equipment such as small bulldozers and bobcats.
  • Perform operator pre‑checks on equipment, examining lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems; make necessary minor adjustments and report malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Equipment Operator in the Water & Wastewater Services division. The announcement will remain open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time.

Job Overview

Operates large trucks and heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, skid‑steer loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, tractor trailers, and other machinery as assigned. Responsibilities include completing daily paperwork, work orders, demonstrating good communication skills, and functioning as a team player.

General Description

Performs skilled work in the operation of large vehicles and equipment, working under general supervision while determining how and when to complete tasks. The position involves transporting construction equipment, operating tractor‑trailer and tandem trucks, handling heavy‑duty road rollers, and operating smaller earth‑moving equipment such as small bulldozers and bobcats.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment related to the assignment area.

Special Certifications and Licenses
  • Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (Class “A”) for the duration of the appointment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Airfield driving privileges for movement and non‑movement areas.
  • Compliance with the Drug‑Free Workplace Policy in accordance with the Federal Drug‑Free Workplace Act of 1988.

Preferences
  • Associate’s Degree in Engineering or a related field, or vocational school certification in crane operation or a related field.

  • At least one (1) year of experience in operating a CDL Class “A” vehicle, front‑end loader, backhoe, crane, and vacuum truck as demonstrated in the WWS Practical Skills Exam.
