Job summary

Town of Flower Mound is seeking a Public Works Equipment Operator to operate, maintain, and repair a fleet of utility and street maintenance vehicles. This role involves daily inspections, adherence to safety standards, and supporting multiple departments on municipal projects.

A High School Diploma or GED and a valid Texas driver's license are required, with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months. Preference for CDL holders; on-call availability and physical demands noted.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair equipment such as backhoes, excavators, loaders, trenchers, dump trucks, skid steers, and sewer-cleaning vehicles.
  • Clean, repair, and maintain utility lines and services, including trench excavation for main/service line installation.
  • Conduct daily inspections and preventive maintenance to vehicles/tools in line with DOT and safety standards.
  • Perform sewer line cleaning and other maintenance/construction tasks.
  • Work safely in high-traffic areas and assist with training of staff.

Job description

Sign‑On Incentive Program
  • $1,500 sign‑on incentive is available for newly hired Public Works employees (excluding Administrative Staff).
  • Paid on the employee's first paycheck following hire.
  • Limited to one sign‑on incentive per employee while the program is in effect.
  • Employees who leave Town employment within 90 days must repay $750.
  • Incentives are paid through payroll and are subject to applicable taxes.
Employee Referral Incentive Program
  • $500 when the referred employee is hired.
  • $1,000 after the referred employee successfully completes six months of employment.
  • $1,500 total incentive.
  • Applicants must identify the referring employee on their employment application for the referral to qualify.
  • Incentives are paid through payroll and are subject to applicable taxes.

Preference given to applicants who already possess a valid Texas Class "A" CDL.

Job Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain, and repair equipment such as backhoes, excavators, loaders, trenchers, dump trucks, skid steers, and sewer‑cleaning vehicles; use hand and power tools as needed.
  • Clean, repair, and maintain utility lines and services, including excavation of trenches and ditches for main and service line installation.
  • Conduct daily inspections and preventive maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment, ensuring compliance with Department of Transportation and safety standards.
  • Perform sewer line cleaning, loading and unloading of materials, and other maintenance or construction tasks.
  • Work safely in and around high‑traffic areas, medians, and rights‑of‑way.
  • Train employees in equipment operation, maintenance, and safety techniques.
  • Identify potential hazards, liability exposures, and public inquiries, reporting findings to the supervisor.
  • Assist with utility maintenance duties and support other departments as needed.
  • Adhere to Town, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Valid state‑issued driver’s license is required.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License, with proper endorsements and without restrictions, within six (6) months from the date of hire.
  • Driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
  • One (1) year of experience in utility maintenance and/or equipment operation, including backhoes, excavators, front loaders, and sewer line flushing trucks, is required.
Physical Abilities
  • Must be able to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow written or verbal instructions.
  • Requires sufficient hand, foot, and eye coordination to operate construction equipment safely.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. of equipment multiple times per day; bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and operate vibrating equipment.
  • Must be able to work indoors, outdoors, underground, in confined spaces, trenches, and uneven or muddy terrain, under noisy and adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rain, sleet, snow, heat, dust, fumes, chemicals, and traffic hazards).
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Desired Qualification
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Water Distribution Operator or Wastewater Collection II license is preferred.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Skilled in the safe operation of light to heavy equipment, vehicles, and small power tools.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, make competent decisions, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Strong multitasking and time management skills; able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to respond within 30 minutes to on‑call or emergency callbacks.
