Job summary

The City of San Antonio is seeking an Equipment Operator to perform skilled work operating light to heavy equipment for park, street, and public property maintenance. The role may supervise staff and works at various Service Centers in San Antonio.

Duties include operating dump trucks 10 cy or less, road construction equipment, minor maintenance, and related manual labor such as pothole repairs. CDL B is required within six months of employment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • One (1) year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment or completion of SA Ready to Work CDL training.
  • Must obtain a valid Texas Class B CDL within six months of employment.

Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work operating light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of parks, streets, and other public properties. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff. May be assigned to work at any of the following Service Center locations:

  • Northeast Service Center - 10303 Toolyard, San Antonio, Texas 78233
  • Southeast Service Center - 1318 Southeast Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas 78220
  • Northwest Service Center - 6939 W Loop 1604 N, San Antonio, Texas 78254
  • West Service Center - 6798 Culebra Road, San Antonio, Texas 78228
  • Southwest Service Center - 6927 W. Commerce, San Antonio Texas 78228
Work Hours

Varies based on assigned location and/or the needs of the department

Essential Job Functions
  • Operates a 10 cy or less dump trucks to and from work locations, construction sites, etc.
  • Operates various types of road construction equipment such as skid loader, flat wheel roller, pneumatic roller sweepers, and oil distributors.
  • Performs minor maintenance and service checks on equipment.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities such as; pot-hole repair, base and pavement repair, and street maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and service checks on equipment.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities.
  • May prepare a daily log of activities.
  • Cleans and removes debris from streets, drainage, ditches, and other areas, frequently lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Removes brush and trash from drainage inlets.
  • Transports tools and equipment to and from work sites.
  • May assist in the placement of barricades, signs, flashers, and safety cones.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • One (1) year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment or completion of an SA: Ready to Work CDL training program.
  • Must obtain a Valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver's License plus all required endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Class "A" or Class "B" Commercial Driver's License.
  • Three (3) + years' experience in all aspects of street construction / reconstruction.
  • Three (3) + years' experience with hot and/or cold mix asphalt placement.
  • Three (3) + years' experience repairing potholes with patch truck.
  • Three (3) + years' experience operating medium to heavy equipment (i.e. front-end loader, skid loader, double drum roller, pneumatic roller, etc.).

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Working conditions are primarily outside in a construction site environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction dust, damp/wet surfaces, overhead power lines, high noise, oily surfaces, liquid asphalt, and lime.
