Job summary

The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities in Alaska is seeking an Equipment Operator Journey 1/2 at the Central Maintenance Station, MP 127 Steese Highway. The role involves winter and summer maintenance, road and infrastructure upkeep, and emergency response.

CDL is required and travel may be involved. This is a full-time position with competitive base wages of $30.90/hour for Journey 1 and $32.76/hour for Journey 2, OT eligible.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate heavy equipment for maintenance tasks including snow removal and infrastructure repairs.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and assist with shop upkeep.
• Maintain roads, bridges, drainage, signage, guardrails, and landscaping; perform bridge work and summer travel when needed.
• Operate plows, sanders, graders, and related equipment for snow removal and snow haul operations.
• Respond to hazards, flooding, debris, and emergencies; mark and clear obstructions for safety.
• Set up traffic control for work zones with arrow boards, flagging, etc.
• Address material spills from equipment leaks or accidents.
• Attend required trainings (Traffic Control, First Aid/CPR, OSHA) and prepare for WG 53 test.
• Perform other duties including lower-grade tasks and shop maintenance.

What you will be doing: Equipment Operator Journey 1/2:

• Set up and operate various heavy equipment for maintenance tasks, including snow removal, hauling, drainage, and infrastructure repairs.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, operator maintenance (fluid checks, cleaning, blade changes), and assist with shop upkeep.
• Maintain roads, bridges, drainage structures, signage, guardrails, and landscaping. Perform bridge repairs, including painting, sandblasting, and concrete work, with potential for summer travel.
• Operate plows, sanders, graders, and other equipment for snow removal, apply abrasives, and handling snow haul operations.
• Respond to road hazards, flooding, debris removal, and other emergencies. Mark and clear obstructions and ensure safe winter working conditions.
• Set up traffic control for work zones using devices like arrow boards, flagging, and other methods for both winter and summer maintenance activities.
• Address material spills, typically caused by equipment leaks or accidents.
• Attend required training (e.g., Traffic Control, First Aid/CPR, OSHA) and train on heavy-duty equipment for snow and ice control, including preparation for the WG 53 test.
• Perform other tasks assigned, including lower-grade duties, and assisting with shop maintenance.

There is no bunkhouse available at this location; applicants must have reliable transportation to and from the duty station, each day. FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Equipment Operator 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

• Equipment Operator Journey 1 - A minimum of a Class B Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at the time of hire. A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not yet possess a Class A CDL. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain a Class A CDL within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
• Equipment Operator Journey 2 - A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

Selected candidates must comply with the DOTPF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
