Job summary

The City of Alexandria is seeking an Equipment Operator II, Sanitation to operate rear-loading refuse trucks and support crews on assigned routes. This role emphasizes dexterity in handling trucks and related equipment while ensuring safety and timely collection.

A valid Louisiana Class B CDL with Air Brakes is required; higher licenses/endorsements may be needed for some equipment. Work schedule is 40 hours weekly with potential overtime; applications accepted Oct 7-21, 2026.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience operating medium-sized equipment (e.g., bush hogs, backhoes, mini-excavators, large tractor-trailers) or equivalent.
• Valid Class B CDL with Air Brakes; may require Flagging certification.
• Class A CDL and/or endorsements may be required for some equipment.
• Must obtain and maintain Louisiana Class A or B CDL at time of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Operates rear-loading sanitation/refuse truck on assigned route to collect solid waste.
• Positions vehicle for efficient collection and monitors back-of-truck crew safety.
• Operates packer/automatic dumping equipment as needed to complete work.
• Responds to emergency calls and may assist in refuse collection.

Equipment Operator II, Sanitation

Annual Salary: $36,385.75 Grade: 17

The City of Alexandria is seeking professional individuals to begin a career in the Sanitation Department, located in the heart of Central Louisiana to operate light and medium-sized equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of City streets/roads, drainage systems, right-of-way areas, parking lots, parks, recreation facilities, grounds areas, or other areas of assignment.Emphasis is on the operation of trucks, tractors, and other equipment that include mechanisms that are somewhat complex to operate, requiring more dexterity and finesse, or larger vehicles requiring a higher level of skill to drive/maneuver in and around confined spaces; incumbents may occasionally operate equipment at higher levels, but not as their primary work function. Classification is reserved for those positions where operation of included equipment is the primary function of the job.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Drives rear-loading sanitation / refuse truck along an assigned route to collect municipal solid waste: follows prescribed route, working to keep pace with targets for timely completion of the route; positions the vehicle optimally for sanitation workers to collect bins efficiently; operates packer and automated dumping equipment as necessary to complete work; communicates with and monitors work activities of sanitation workers on the back of the truck to ensure their safety and to make sure work is completed properly.
• Responds to emergency calls during inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
• May occasionally assist in the collection of refuse.
• Applicants must be able to operate a Garbage Truck

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Experience in the operation of medium-sized equipment, such as bush hogs, backhoes, mini-excavators, large tractor-trailers, etc.; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license and may be required to obtain Flagging certification. Assignment on some equipment may require a Class A commercial driver’s license and/or special endorsements. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class A or B commercial driver’s license at the time of appointment and must maintain throughout employment for this classification.

Necessary Special Requirements

Sanitation Department must possess a valid State of Louisiana Class B commercial driver’s license with Air Brakes endorsement.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week; may work overtime, including holidays and weekends.
