Job summary

The City of Alexandria is seeking an Equipment Operator II for the Sanitation Department. The annual salary is $36,385.75 with Grade 17, performing street and infrastructure maintenance via light to medium equipment and manual tasks in Central Louisiana.

Responsibilities include operating garbage trucks, coordinating with crew, and responding to weather-related emergencies. Applicants must meet CDL requirements and pass examinations as part of the Civil Service process.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license; may require Class A or endorsements.
• State CDL with Air Brakes endorsement is required for Sanitation Department.

Responsibilities

• Drives rear-loading sanitation truck on assigned routes and assists in collecting waste.
• Operates packer and automated dumping equipment as needed and coordinates with sanitation staff.
• Responds to emergencies and may assist in refuse collection when required.
• Maintains safety and accountability for crew and equipment during daily operations.

Equipment Operator II, Sanitation

The City of Alexandria is seeking professional individuals to begin a career in the Sanitation Department, located in the heart of Central Louisiana to operate light and medium-sized equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of City streets/roads, drainage systems, right-of-way areas, parking lots, parks, recreation facilities, grounds areas, or other areas of assignment.Emphasis is on the operation of trucks, tractors, and other equipment that include mechanisms that are somewhat complex to operate, requiring more dexterity and finesse, or larger vehicles requiring a higher level of skill to drive/maneuver in and around confined spaces; incumbents may occasionally operate equipment at higher levels, but not as their primary work function. Classification is reserved for those positions where operation of included equipment is the primary function of the job.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Drives rear-loading sanitation / refuse truck along an assigned route to collect municipal solid waste: follows prescribed route, working to keep pace with targets for timely completion of the route; positions the vehicle optimally for sanitation workers to collect bins efficiently; operates packer and automated dumping equipment as necessary to complete work; communicates with and monitors work activities of sanitation workers on the back of the truck to ensure their safety and to make sure work is completed properly.
• Responds to emergency calls during inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
• May occasionally assist in the collection of refuse.
• Applicants must be able to operate a Garbage Truck

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED. Experience in the operation of medium-sized equipment, such as bush hogs, backhoes, mini-excavators, large tractor-trailers, etc.; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license and may be required to obtain Flagging certification.Assignment on some equipment may require a Class A commercial driver’s license and/or special endorsements.Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class A or B commercial driver’s license at the time of appointment and must maintain throughout employment for this classification.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Sanitation Department must possess a valid State of Louisiana Class B commercial driver’s license with Air Brakes endorsement.

Work Schedule:

40 hours per week; may work overtime, including holidays and weekends.
