Qualifications

  • Maintains Daily Pre-Post Trip Inspection Book per 49 CFR 396.11 & 396.13.
  • Documents pickups by emailing pictures to supervisor and leaving doorhangers for residents.

The Prince George’s County Department of the Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Equipment Operator II grade A15 position, in the Sustainable Waste Management/Bulky Section.

About the Position

Incumbent of this position operates light and heavy refuse collection vehicles including 29-cubic yard packer trash trucks, roll-off vehicles and open body collection vehicles and is responsible for daily supervision and operational direction of Laborer(s) I/II assigned to the vehicle. Work is performed under general supervision of the Crew Supervisor II and is periodically inspected for efficiency of operation, supervision of the assigned work crew and adherence to good safety practices and procedures. This position is designated “essential” in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful, and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management, and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Flood Management and Environmental Resilience Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing, and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities, and households (Sustainable Waste Management Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Flood Management and Environmental Resilience Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints, and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

  • Operates all light to heavy refuse collection equipment, as assigned by crew supervisor, to support daily and long-term refuse collection activities.
  • Complies with all local and State motor vehicle laws and Departmental regulations pertaining to operation of vehicles and equipment and red light, speeding and accident State/County violations.
  • Maintains a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
  • Adheres to All Agency & County anti-scavenging policies.
  • Maintains Daily Pre-Post Trip Inspection Book for assigned vehicles as required by Federal Law 49 CFR 396.11 & 396.13.
  • Documents pickups by using Cell Phone to email pictures to keep supervisor informed of any issues or problems and leaving doorhangers for residents documenting issues with pickups.
  • Responsible for documentation and safe operations of the assigned Laborer I/II in the collection and disposal of residential bulky solid waste.
  • Performs daily pre-trip/post-trip inspections and manufacturer's daily maintenance checklist procedures including, but not limited to grease, tire air pressure, engine fluid, hydraulic fluid levels and fuel quantity.
  • Adjusts fluid levels to meet operational standards.
  • Cleans assigned vehicle daily.
  • Participates in the training of subordinate equipment operators and laborers as required.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties, which may not be specifically listed in the position description but are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • One (1) year as an Equipment Operator I with Prince George's County Government.

OR

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two (2) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment.
  • A valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities.
  • Successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergency service calls on a 24-hour basis.
