Job summary

The City of Fayetteville is seeking an Equipment Operator I for the Transit department to operate light construction and maintenance equipment in support of various transit activities including mowing and loading. You will inspect and maintain equipment, transport gear to sites, assist with repairs, and help with traffic control and safety around work zones.

A valid driver's license and six months of experience are required.

Qualifications

• Six months of experience involving the skilled operation of light construction and maintenance equipment in parks, cemeteries, horticulture environments, street repair/maintenance, transit operations or related field.

Responsibilities

• Operate light construction power-driven equipment including tractors, riding mowers, push-mowers, small dump trucks and other equipment.
• Participate in repair and maintenance of city properties such as parks, cemeteries, streets, bus shelters and drainage systems.
• Perform grounds maintenance and minor repairs including mowing, seeding, weeding, truck driving and related tasks.
• Identify equipment needs for projects; transport and deliver equipment to sites; inspect and secure equipment.
• Maintain records and logs of work; perform basic preventive maintenance on light equipment.
• Transport construction equipment and materials as needed.
• Install street barricades and cones; direct traffic around work sites.
• Perform routine repairs to plumbing, electrical and mechanical fixtures and equipment.

Job description

The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for an Equipment Operator I in our Transit department to construction and maintenance equipment in support of a variety of transit vehicles and equipment activities including mowing, loading and related operations; and to perform other transit operations.

1. Operate light construction power-driven equipment, such as tractors, riding mowers, push-mowers, small dump trucks, solid waste collection vehicles and a variety of other equipment in support of maintenance, solid waste and construction operations.
2. Participate in the repair and maintenance of city owned properties such as parks, cemeteries, city streets, roads, alleyways, bus shelters, benches, solar lights, bus stop signs and/or drainage systems.
3. Perform additional grounds maintenance, construction and maintenance tasks such as mowing, clearing fence lines of obstructions, seeding, weeding, truck driving, and a variety of minor repair activities.
4. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; transport and deliver equipment to and from construction sites or bus stop locations; maintain equipment; inspect equipment prior to use; secure equipment following use.
5. Maintain records and logs of all work performed and complete basic preventive maintenance on light equipment as required.
6. Transport construction equipment and materials as needed.
7. Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
8. Perform routine repairs to plumbing, electrical and mechanical fixtures and equipment.

Experience

Training

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS

Required

• Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability.

• Safety course completion
• Defensive Driving course completion
• Biohazard course completion
• Flagger certification
• Pesticide Applicator license

Selection Process

From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4 - 6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen, background check and driving history check.
