Job summary

City of Midland, TX is seeking an Equipment Operator I to perform entry-level, manual labor tasks related to traffic signs, markings and devices. You will operate various light/heavy equipment, perform inspections, and assist with setup of work zones.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Operate light and heavy equipment and tools.
  • Install and maintain roadway markings and signage.
  • Paint lane lines and curbs; assist with traffic control setup.
  • Maintain records of work orders and schedules.
  • Keep work area and equipment in good condition.
  • Address citizen concerns on job sites.
  • Attend safety meetings and support other city divisions as needed.

Job description

Equipment Operator I is an entry-level Equipment Operator Position. Equipment Operator I will perform manual and unskilled labor on traffic signs and markings, which involves the use of acquired skills. Operate several types of light and heavy vehicles, equipment, and tools. Do related work and training as required. Responsible for the installation and maintenance of devices that provide for the orderly and predictable movement of all motorized, non-motorized and pedestrian traffic.

  • Performs pre-trip/post-trip vehicle/equipment inspections.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance of motorized equipment or hand tools.
  • Inspect the overall safety of various job projects. Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in good and safe operating condition.
  • Keeps jobsite and vehicles/equipment neat and in order.
  • Performs any related duties needed to complete projects.
  • Maintains records of work performed such as work schedules, status reports and records of work orders.
  • Paints lane lines on the streets and thoroughfares.
  • Paints designated curbs.
  • Installs and maintains thermoplastic roadway markings and signage throughout the city.
  • Installs and maintains lane marking devices and barricades.
  • Assists with the proper set up of work zone traffic control.
  • Fulfill on-call duties as required and outlined on Traffic Operations on-call roster.
  • Assists with the maintenance of Traffic Operations building and grounds.
  • Assists other City divisions and departments as needed.
  • Trims trees in order to clear sign obstructions.

  • Attends monthly safety meetings
  • Keep work location and vehicle(s)/equipment in order.
  • Ensure all safety equipment is being utilized daily.
  • Assists in loading and unloading to transported material and equipment.
  • Address citizen concerns on the job site.
  • Inspect the overall safety of various job projects. Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The incumbent works in an outside environment; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Must be able to lift working materials several times daily.

Minimum Education & Work Experience
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • 6 months experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
