Job summary

The City of Fort Worth Transportation and Public Works Street Operations Department seeks an Equipment Operator to repair potholes and maintain street surfaces on asphalt and concrete. You will work on various equipment, perform pre/post inspections, and participate in an on‑call rotation for after-hours emergencies.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, 1 year heavy equipment experience, and a valid Class A CDL with Tank Endorsement within 6 months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 1 year of heavy equipment operation or construction experience.
• Class A Driver’s License with ability to obtain Tank Endorsement within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment and perform street maintenance duties.
• Assist with pothole repairs on asphalt and concrete streets.
• Post- and pre-trip inspections and preventive maintenance.
• Set up traffic control cones and barriers and respond to high-priority calls.

Pay Range: $22.17 - $24.67

$2,000 Sign-On Incentive: 50% paid on the completion of the first pay period, 50% paid after 6 months of employment.

Workdays & Hours:

Depending on assignment:

• Monday – Thursday 7 am – 5:30 pm
• Tuesday – Friday 7 am – 5:30 pm

This position is a first responder in severe weather conditions/emergencies which will be subject to work after hours, emergency call back hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and will participate in an on‑call rotation schedule.

An Equipment Operator position is available with the City of Fort Worth Transportation and Public Works Street Operations Department. Candidates for this position will work on asphalt and concrete streets, with a primary focus on repairing potholes and other roadway surface deficiencies.

The ideal candidate will have experience performing pothole repairs on both asphalt and concrete streets, including preparing and cleaning damaged areas, removing debris, applying tack, placing asphalt or concrete materials, and properly compacting or finishing repairs to ensure a safe, durable, and sustainable roadway surface…

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma/GED
• One (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment or construction experience
• Possess a Class A Driver’s License and ability to obtain a Tank Endorsement will be required within six (6) months of hire. Operations of a dump truck, equipment hauling and operating various equipment as required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
• Work zone safety
• Additional construction repair and maintenance experience
• Concrete or Asphalt experience
• Experience with saws, compressor, generator, various hand tools, skid steer, excavator
• Basic computer skills & data entry experience

The Equipment Operator job responsibilities include:

• Work in all weather conditions
• Equipment operations and manual labor duties as they relate to street maintenance operations
• Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations
• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment assigned. Perform pre and post trip inspection on equipment.
• Loads and unloads heavy materials and equipment by hand and with tools/machines
• Assists with set‑up of traffic control cones and barriers
• Maintain paperwork, respond to high priority calls and provide training and instruction to other personnel who operate equipment related to assigned division
• Performs other duties as required

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting, depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

Physical Demand

Heavy Work– Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
