Job summary

Sampson Construction is seeking Equipment Operators to operate power construction equipment that moves, digs, or grades earth and to handle machines that spread, smooth, or level asphalt and concrete. You will read plans, set layouts, and coordinate material deliveries on site.

The role requires knowledge of construction methods, safety practices, and the ability to work with diverse tools and machinery in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods and perform strenuous physical labor.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use small equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.

Responsibilities

  • Operate tamping machines or roll surfaces to compact earth fills.
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment or report malfunctions.
  • Ensure proper safety gear and procedures are followed.
  • Perform tasks assigned by the site superintendent/foreman.

Job description

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Equipment Operators will operate different kinds of power construction equipment that move, dig, or grade earth. They also operate machines that spread, smooth, or level asphalt and concrete.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
  2. Site layout and use of layout instruments.
  3. Use of basic hand tools and basic power tools.
  4. Ability to Operate basic equipment (forklift, skid loader, rubber tire loader, water pumps, grinders, bobcat attachments, tamps, lifts).
  5. Understanding of the various building types and construction methods (steel frame, masonry, pre-cast building, pre-engineered metal building, wood framed building, etc.).
  6. Recognizes and properly handles material deliveries to jobsite.
  7. Understands and implements safety procedures and practices.
  8. Welding and metal fabrication skills.
  9. Scaffold assembly skills.
  10. Operator skills on heavy equipment.
  11. Reads grade and can grade to lines.
  12. Coordinate truck dumping or haul off.
  13. Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact earth fills or foundation materials.
  14. Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment or report malfunctions to supervisors.
  15. Ensure that proper safety (wearing hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.) and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Safety Director or HR Director.
  16. Performs all tasks required or assigned by job site superintendent / foreman.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust.
  • Must be able to lift 100 pounds. Must be able to push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
