Job summary

RailWorks in Chehalis, WA is seeking an Equipment Operator to operate heavy equipment at the job site to construct, repair and maintain railroad tracks. This is a novice level position with room to grow with experience.

You will inspect and operate equipment such as backhoes and loaders, move materials, and perform rail maintenance while following safety policies. A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel are required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year experience operating heavy equipment in construction.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, and operates maintenance equipment such as backhoes and loaders.
  • Operates equipment to move, load, or unload material and perform rail maintenance tasks.
  • Operates equipment safely and in compliance with regulations and procedures.
  • Keeps records of material and equipment usage.
  • Completes daily inspection reports.
  • Coordinates machine actions with crew signals.
  • Locates underground services prior to work.
  • Repairs and maintains equipment and performs daily greasing.
  • Studies plans and diagrams to establish work requirements.

Compensation

PAY RANGE: $25/hour - $35/hour

Position Summary

The Equipment Operator’s primary function is to operate heavy equipment at the site of work to construct, repair and maintain the railroad track. Operators are also expected to assist in other duties around the job site as needed. This position is considered as a novice level.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Inspects, maintains, and operates maintenance equipment such as backhoes and loaders.
  • Operates equipment to move, load, or unload material or perform other rail related maintenance tasks.
  • Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Takes actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, and falling objects.
  • While operating equipment, communicate with others using verbal and non-verbal hand signals.
  • Complies with Company Safety Program
  • Keeps records of material and equipment usage and problems encountered.
  • Performs equipment safety, maintenance, and brake checks.
  • Fill out daily inspection report and turn into foreman on a daily basis.
  • Complete job briefs throughout the day as necessary with other employees in/around machine and work area.
  • Coordinates machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
  • Locates underground services, such as pipes and wires, prior to beginning work.
  • Repairs and maintains equipment (including daily greasing), making emergency adjustments as necessary.
  • Studies instructions, plans, and diagrams to establish work requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment.
  • Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and available to travel.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety requirements and procedures
  • Ability to read and understand construction specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Works at construction sites
  • Uses hands to handle and control materials, tools and vehicle controls
  • Sits for long periods of time in a closed vehicle
  • Uses repetitive motions
  • Uses close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
  • Moves or lifts heavy equipment and objects up to 50 pounds
  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts
  • Exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather
  • Exposed to loud noise
