Job summary

The City of Abilene is seeking an Equipment Mechanic III to maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide range of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. You will oversee complex repairs, review diagnostics, and ensure safety and reliability across the fleet.

You will train and guide trainees and less experienced mechanics while coordinating parts and service with the Fleet Maintenance team to keep operations efficient and compliant with safety standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Experience in skilled mechanical work on heavy equipment is preferred.
• Proficiency reading technical manuals, schematics, and repair specifications.
• Ability to travel to job sites and respond to emergencies as needed.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and diagnose gasoline and diesel vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Overhaul and repair components such as brakes, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
• Maintain maintenance records in fleet software and coordinate parts with supply staff.
• Lead, mentor, and provide training to Equipment Mechanic Trainees and junior staff.
