Job summary

Thurston County Government, Central Services Fleet Services in Olympia, WA, seeks an Equipment Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, and repair county-owned equipment, from passenger vehicles to heavy trucks. The role requires reading blueprints, using diagnostic software, and entering job orders in FIMS.

This essential position is represented by a union and operates on a 4/10 schedule (6:00 am–4:30 pm). A HS diploma or GED and two years of journey-level experience are required; WA CDL with air brake

Job Description The salary range for this position is $5,526.00 - $6,847.00 monthly.

Thurston County Central Services is recruiting for an Equipment Mechanic to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Fleet Services team. The successful candidate will inspect, diagnose, and repair all types of equipment used in highway maintenance and other county owned vehicles.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical equipment on passenger vehicles, construction, agriculture, and forestry equipment, heavy trucks, and all other County-owned equipment.
• Designing and repairing electrical systems.
• Entering job order data on county provided computer using FIMS software.
• Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and service manuals.
• Utilizing a variety of diagnostic software applications and scan tools.
• Road testing vehicles and equipment after repair.

Essential Personnel:

This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs.

Working Conditions

• Work Environment – Approximately 90% of duties are performed in a shop environment with physical effort exerted while lifting machine parts and tires ranging from 25 to 125 lbs. Physical injury can result from exposure to a variety of automotive and welding fumes and moving parts.
• Schedule – 4/10s, 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Workload demands may occasionally require work outside the assigned work hours.
• Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings and to perform road tests on vehicles.
• Customer Interactions - Daily interactions via phone, in-person, and video with Thurston County staff and vendors.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience working under the direction of a journey-level mechanic and one year as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing light and/or heavy-duty highway equipment.
• Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement, within 6 months from date of hire.

Desired Skills

• Ability to diagnose and repair major and minor mechanical and electrical defects in vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
• Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools used in automotive maintenance work.
• Current ASE Certification.
• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with members of the public, customers, and internal staff.
• Ability to work as an effective team member
