Job summary

State of Utah’s Office of Communicable Diseases seeks an Environmental Epidemiologist to manage the Tracking data warehouse, fulfill data requests, and provide analytical and epidemiological support for investigations.

The role is hybrid, based in Salt Lake City, UT, with standard schedule Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm, and requires MPH or higher, strong English communication, and experience with R.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manage tracking data and data warehouse for environmental epidemiology investigations.
  • Provide analytical and epidemiological support for investigations to the EEP.
  • Assist with data requests and reporting to CDC cooperative agreement.
  • Maintain and update the Tracking data views on Utah's Public Health Tracking Network.
  • Collaborate with environmental epidemiologists and share expertise with national tracking workgroups.

FT / PT Status – Full-Time Salary – $26.61 - $42.22 Hourly Wage Remote Work / In-Office – Hybrid Application Deadline – 8/27/2026*

Key Responsibilities

Do you have experience with statistical programming? Do you enjoy working with data? The Office of Communicable Diseases is looking for a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual (who also has a background with the R Programming language) to join our team as an Environmental Epidemiologist. This position plays an essential role within DHHS as you will manage our tracking data and data warehouse, fulfill data requests, and provide analytical and epidemiological support for investigations to the Environmental Epidemiology Program (EEP).

Under the guidance of the EEP Tracking Section manager and project manager this person would…

  • Assist with the goals and objectives of the Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (Tracking) CDC cooperative agreement.
  • Assist with maintaining and managing the Tracking data warehouse.
  • Assist environmental epidemiologists in facilitating data requests, data analysis, and reports to support public health investigations, and producing data reports required for the CDC cooperative agreement.
  • Ensures that the Tracking data views on Utah’s Public Health Tracking Network web portal is maintained and updated.
  • Provide analytical and epidemiological support for investigations in other areas of the Environmental Epidemiology Program.
  • Contribute epidemiological expertise on national tracking workgroups.
  • Communicate to the public when needed as it relates to the position.
Supplemental Information
  • The typical office setting for this job is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, you may encounter some risks that are associated with any office setting, for example, the safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • This position is currently a hybrid of two (2) in-office and three (3) remote work days. Please note, a position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion, at any time, and for any reason.
Qualifications

Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

  • Master of Public Health (MPH, MSPH) degree or higher
  • Ability to clearly communicate and write in English
  • Ability to work well with a team and independently
  • Ability to think critically to identify and solve problems
  • A high level of competency in the use of modern technology for presentation, communication, and collaboration using both software and hardware
Preferred Or Trainable/on-the-job Qualifications
  • Work experience in Environmental Epidemiology at a state health department level
  • Experience with statistical software programming languages (Experience using R in a public health department setting is preferred)
  • Ability to manage, manipulate, and analyze large data sets using R (or other statistical programming language)
  • Technical writing and grant writing experience
  • Understanding of website development and maintenance, WordPress experience is desirable
