Job summary

Great American Insurance Group is seeking an Underwriter Trainee to join our Exton, PA, Boston, MA, or New York City offices. This hybrid role combines in-office collaboration with remote work.

The ideal candidate is a recent science/engineering graduate or early-career environmental professional who will learn to price, review environmental reports, and develop client relationships. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering or related discipline, ideally environmental.
• 0–2 years of insurance or environmental consulting experience preferred.
• Strong MS Office skills and must be good with technology.

Responsibilities

• Participates in risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention and profitability per divisional objectives.
• Reviews and interprets environmental reports (Phase I/II) and other technical documents.
• Learns to price, analyze coverage and build relationships with clients and brokers.
• Assists in assessing risk quality and compliance within guidelines and supporting loss prevention actions.
• Supports senior underwriters in visiting agents and developing new opportunities.

The Environmental Division of the Great American Insurance Group provides a comprehensive portfolio of environmental insurance products to a broad array of industries. All products can be customized to address the specific risks and exposures of the client.

We are looking for an Underwriter Trainee to join our Exton, PA, Boston, MA, or New York City office. Great American’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Participates in activities related to risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.

• Review, summarize, and interpret environmental reports, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase I Site Investigations, and other technical documents.

• Works with the underwriting team to learn how to price business, analyze coverage and how to develop and maintain effective business relationships with internal and external customers.

• Learns to assess risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and to initiate appropriate loss prevention actions.

• Learns to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.

• Participates in visiting agents, brokers, and producers with a more senior underwriter and learns to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.

• Learns to interpret, explain, and market products and services.

• Learns to apply underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering or a related discipline, ideally with an environmental focus.

• Generally, 0-2 years of insurance or environmental consulting experience is preferred.

• Strong MS Office skills and must be good with technology.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• The ideal candidate will be a recent science or engineering graduate or an early-career environmental professional.
