Job summary

BETA Group, Inc. is seeking an Environmental Staff Scientist in the Lincoln, RI area. The role involves delivering environmental consulting services with a balance of fieldwork and office duties, beginning May 2027 graduates welcome to apply.

You will collaborate with planners, engineers, and GIS professionals on a diverse project portfolio across New England, with mentorship and opportunities for growth within an employee-owned firm. Hybrid schedule allows remote work up to 2 days per week.

Qualifications

• BS in Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Engineering or a related field.
• 0–2 years of environmental investigation/remediation experience
• Familiarity with GPS field instruments and processes
• Record and reduce field notes with accuracy
• Proficient in MS Office and data reporting
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail
• Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Responsibilities

• Conduct Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments
• Support site investigations and remediation projects under MCP and Rhode Island regulations
• Collect soil, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas samples; assist with drilling oversight
• Support environmental assessments, site inspections, and remediation projects
• Analyze field data, prepare GIS maps and figures, assist with technical reports
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, LSPs, and staff on projects
• Maintain accurate field documentation and project records
• Develop technical expertise through mentorship and increasing responsibilities

As an Environmental Staff Scientist, you will collaborate with planners, engineers, environmental scientists, landscape architects, and GIS professionals while working on a diverse portfolio of environmental investigation, remediation, redevelopment, and infrastructure projects throughout New England.

This is an exciting opportunity for May 2027 graduates to gain practical experience delivering environmental consulting services while building technical skills in field investigations, environmental sampling, technical reporting, and regulatory compliance. You will split your time between the field and the office to develop the technical skills needed for a successful career in environmental consulting. Through mentorship and collaboration with experienced professionals, you will enhance your skills, advance your career, and contribute to the success of a growing, employee‑owned group.

Responsibilities

• Conduct Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments
• Support site investigations and remediation projects under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) and Rhode Island Remediation Regulations
• Collect soil, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas samples and assist with drilling oversight and remediation activities
• Support environmental assessments, site inspections, and remediation projects
• Analyze field data, prepare GIS maps and figures, and assist with technical reports and regulatory submittals
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, Licensed Site Professionals, and technical staff on a variety of environmental projects
• Maintain accurate field documentation, project records, and quality work products
• Build technical expertise through mentorship, training, and increasing project responsibilities

Preferred location is BETA’s Lincoln, RI office. Candidates should have flexibility to work from our other office locations. BETA also offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing employees to request working remotely up to 2 days per week.

Requirements

Required Experience/Skills

• BS in Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Engineering or a related field
• 0 to 2 years' experience conducting environmental investigation, remediation, MCP compliance
• Familiarity with GPS field instruments and processes
• Ability to record and reduce field notes
• Excellent time management, and ability to manage multiple assignments
• Proficient in the use of current technology (i.e., tablets, smart phones, laptops, etc.)
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
• Strong technical aptitude and an eagerness to learn
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
• Must be able to lift/move objects weighing up to 40 pounds
• Must be able to perform field work in both hot and cold weather (rain and/or snow)
• Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
• Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
