This is specialized professional environmental work independently monitoring the environment around nuclear power reactor sites, inspecting low-level radioactive waste shipments, maintaining and calibrating environmental sampling equipment, maintaining and operating various radiation detection equipment, supporting training and exercise events for First Responders, serving as an on-call duty officer. Duties include:

Plans and schedules the monitoring of environmental radiation around nuclear power plants in coordination with facility staff. Collects environmental samples and coordinates with laboratory staff to assure quality control criteria are met. Conducts land use surveys of areas around the nuclear power plants to locate residences, gardens, and milk animals. Prepares and maintains reports on environmental sample collections.

Plans for and inspects low-level radioactive waste shipments before shipment to disposal sites. Prepares report of each shipment and any violations of state and federal regulations and corrective actions taken. Reviews federal and state regulations to determine impact on the transportation of radioactive materials.

Calibrates and maintains air, water and biota sample collection equipment and radiation detection equipment needed to measure environmental radiation.

Maintains state vehicle in a manner appropriate for environmental sampling activities and inspections of low-level radioactive waste shipments.

Serves as a member of Florida’s radiological emergency response team.

PRND Specialist. Serves in Preventative Radiological and Nuclear Detection capabilities in support of various local, state and federal agencies including law enforcement at all three levels.

Serve as an On-Call Duty Officer. Handles statewide radiation incident calls, radiation accidents and emergencies after hours on a rotating basis per a duty officer roster.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Available on a 24-hour-a-day basis for response to radiation emergencies. Perform duties as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team. Employee is subject to emergency calls from his residence for the protection of life or property.

This position has Pcard responsibilities. This position is in compliance with and monitors compliance (when applicable) with the mandatory requirements in Sections 215.422 and 112.061, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 691-24.001, Florida Administrative Code.

The incumbent is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36.003, Florida Administrative Code.

Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License. The incumbent in this position may be required to use vehicles owned, leased, or operated by the state or county to conduct official state business. State or county vehicles shall be used only for officially authorized duties and not for personal use, unless a specific exception applies under Florida law (F.S. § 287.17).

Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment. Must receive a minimum score of 70% on each written exam of the required core training modules and must attend all required core training courses designated in the training and qualification procedures.
