Job summary

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry, is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to support fruit fly detection and plant pest surveillance. The role involves field inspections, trap servicing, sample collection, and regulatory actions to protect Florida agriculture.

Travel is occasional; candidates should be prepared for outdoor work in varying conditions and to maintain precise records and reports as required by the program guidelines.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or its equivalent and six months of experience in apiculture, environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; agriculture; or engineering.
• An associate degree from an accredited college or university.
• Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

Responsibilities

• Builds, services, and places traps to support fruit fly detection activities.
• Conducts plant pest detection surveys in agricultural and residential areas.
• Collects and submits insects and other samples for laboratory confirmation.
• Inspects plant material from other states and countries for pests and diseases.
• Assists in special programs and may serve as a trainer for staff.
• Maintains records and prepares reports on work performed.
• Performs related duties as directed by management.
