Job description

The Opportunity

Ulteig's environmental team facilitates environmental compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations for public and private clients across all of our Lifeline Sectors: Transportation, Renewables, Power, and Water, as well as other industries we serve. Our goal is to assist clients with developing an approach to environmental compliance and due diligence that balances development with natural and cultural resources protection.

We are currently seeking an Environmental Specialist to support air, water, waste, and spill prevention/response compliance requirements for a key agricultural-industrial processing client. Responsibilities include environmental compliance coordination, field sampling and monitoring oversight, environmental documentation and reporting, and operational and technical support. The candidate must be located in the Fargo, North Dakota, or Grand Forks, North Dakota area.

The Environmental Specialist will primarily participate in environmental tasks for a major agricultural-industrial processing client while also contributing to Ulteig's broader environmental workload. This role requires experience interpreting environmental requirements, sampling, reviewing technical data, preparing clear and defensible documentation, and coordinating with regulatory agencies and facility staff. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support compliance activities, implement monitoring programs, and provide practical environmental guidance. When not supporting our key client, this position will assist with environmental review and permitting for projects across Ulteig's Lifeline Sectors. The successful candidate must be detail oriented, have strong oral and written communication skills, and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on multiple tasks and projects.

What You'll Do
  • Participate in environmental compliance execution for agricultural-industrial facilities by interpreting and applying applicable regulations (Clean Air Act; Clean Water Act (including NPDES/SDS); RCRA; RMP/PSM; SPCC; storage tank, hazardous materials, and solid waste requirements)
  • Execute sampling and monitoring programs
  • Deliver documentation and reporting that is clear, accurate, and defensible
  • Coordinate, communicate, and collaborate with internal, client, and regulatory project teams regarding scientific and technical information
  • Develop lasting professional relationships with current clients through quality client support
  • Engage new clients through professional networking, marketing, and exceptional customer service and support
  • As needed or available, participate in multi-disciplinary teams for the purpose of collecting field data, preparing reports, obtaining permits, and other duties in support of various projects (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act, wetlands, protected species, noise, environmental site assessments, stakeholder engagement, etc.)
What We Expect from You
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental planning, environmental policy, biology, wildlife management, range management, natural resources management, or related field
  • 3-5 years of related experience (advanced degree may count toward experience)
  • Basic understanding of and some experience with relevant Federal, State, and Local regulations (e.g., Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Effective time-management, written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in team situations, as well as establish strong relationships with other teams
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and applicable industry-related software packages (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps)
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup; trailering and utility terrain vehicle (UTV) operation experience is a plus
  • Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds
  • Must be capable of using sampling equipment, instrumentation, shovels, pounding stakes, opening/closing gates, changing tires, and other duties/equipment associated with fieldwork
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Must be willing to travel frequently for fieldwork, occasionally in remote areas with overnight stays
  • Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
