The role requires reading plans, collecting GNSS-based data, and preparing permits and supporting materials for WisDOT and other clients. Remote/hybrid work is possible with travel across Wisconsin.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental science or related field.
  • DNR Wetland Delineation Professional Assurance status.
  • Experience with wetland delineations per USACE manual.
  • WisDOT transportation project experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with DNR/USACE permitting requirements.
  • PWS or WPIT certification preferred.
  • Endangered Resources Reviewer preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform environmental field investigations for transportation projects, including wetlands delineations, ecological assessments, stream evaluations, and other natural resource reviews.
  • Prepare environmental documentation, permits, mapping, and support materials for WisDOT and other projects.
  • Coordinate with clients, design teams, and regulatory agencies to ensure environmental compliance and project approvals.
  • Read roadway/bridge plans, aerial mapping, and project limits to support environmental evaluations.
  • Collect field data using GPS/GNSS and maintain accurate field notes, photography, and records.
  • Manage multiple assignments and deadlines while producing high-quality work.
  • Communicate findings clearly to clients, agencies, and project teams.

Education

Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science, geology, environmental engineering, or a related field
Wisconsin DNR Wetland Delineation Professional Assurance
Experience conducting wetland delineations and preparing stream/wetland assessments
Wisconsin WisDOT project experience preferred
Familiarity with Wisconsin DNR and US Army Corps wetland/waterway permitting
Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or WPIT certification preferred
Wisconsin DNR Certified Endangered Resources Reviewer preferred

Job description

We have an immediate opening for an Environmental Specialist. Applicants must have experience in wetland delineations and environmental documentation to support transportation project implementation in Wisconsin. This position offers an excellent opportunity for upward mobility within a growing firm.

Description
  • Perform environmental field investigations for transportation and infrastructure projects, including: wetland delineations, ecological assessments, stream/waterway evaluations, hazardous material assessments, species-specific surveys, and other natural resource reviews.
  • Prepare environmental documentation, technical memoranda, permit applications, mapping, and supporting materials for WisDOT, county, municipality, and other projects.
  • Coordinate with clients, design teams, and regulatory agencies to support environmental compliance and obtain project approvals.
  • Read and interpret roadway and bridge plans, aerial mapping, topographic information, and project limit details to support environmental evaluations.
  • Conduct field data collection using GPS/GNSS equipment and utilize applications to maintain accurate field notes, photographs, mapping, and project records.
  • Manage multiple assignments and deadlines while producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Communicate findings and environmental requirements clearly to clients, agencies, and project teams.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science, geology, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Wisconsin DNR Wetland Delineation Professional Assurance status.
  • Experience conducting wetland delineations in accordance with US Army Corps of Engineers Manual and preparing associated stream and wetland assessment documentation is strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience supporting WisDOT transportation improvement projects is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Wisconsin DNR and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wetland and waterway permitting requirements.
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or Wetland Professional In Training (WPIT) certification preferred.
  • Wisconsin DNR Certified Endangered Resources Reviewer is preferred.
  • Other environmental certifications or expertise may also be considered beneficial to the position.
Technical Knowledge
  • Ability to access and utilize environmental databases and other available information necessary for project development.
  • Working knowledge of field data collection tools utilizing associated GNSS/GPS survey equipment, software, and other applications.
  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS Pro, &/or ArcGIS Online for feature mapping, analysis, and data sharing.
  • Willingness to explore and utilize other geospatial platforms including AutoCAD, Google Earth, and other tools for data collection, display, and collaboration.
Other
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel to project sites throughout Wisconsin.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer. We will not provide sponsorship for this position.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift at least 25lbs.
  • Ability to walk over uneven, wet, wooded, or otherwise difficult terrain during field investigations.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varied weather and seasonal conditions.
Working Conditions
  • Remote/hybrid work environment with a combination of office and field work.
  • Regular travel throughout Wisconsin associated with field work during portions of the growing season.
  • Occasional overnight travel throughout the year for project meetings, field investigations, training, and professional events.
