HNTB Corporation is seeking an Environmental Scientist II to join our Environmental Planning team. You will contribute to projects across transportation and infrastructure, supporting NEPA documentation, permitting, and environmental compliance.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, mentoring opportunities, and growth across diverse assignments from planning through construction at major regional clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or Master's Degree and 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Experience with NEPA documentation, permitting, or agency coordination is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research, gathers scientific information and data, and performs field investigations with minimal oversight.
  • Determines best methodology for field work and sets up test equipment to obtain data.
  • Prepares data analysis, modeling, and reports to support findings in environmental studies and permitting.
  • Reviews technical reports and plans for environmental review including permitting and mitigation development.
  • Collects and reports on environmental parameters to assess impacts of transportation projects.
  • Provides technical advice to engineers on geologic, hydrologic, or biologic aspects affecting construction.
  • Coordinates with agencies and stakeholders to develop information and assist interpretation.
  • Prepares and participates in public information meetings and hearings.

With our historic growth, it is an exciting time to join our team of employee-owners. We are seeking a motivated Environmental Scientist II to join our growing Environmental Planning team. This position provides an opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team across a wide variety of transportation and infrastructure projects for major clients including Amtrak, SEPTA, PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and state transportation agencies throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. As part of a team of environmental scientists, planners, engineers, and project managers, you will support projects from planning through construction, helping navigate environmental regulations while delivering transportation solutions that improve communities. The work is diverse and may include National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, permitting, agency coordination, field investigations, resource assessments, mitigation development, and specialized technical studies that help advance some of the region's most significant transportation and infrastructure projects. What You'll Do:
  • Conducts research, gathers scientific information and data, and performs field investigations among other supporting activities with minimal oversight.
  • Determines best prescribed methodology for conducting analysis in field work; sets up test equipment as necessary to obtain scientific data.
  • May develop in coordination with Senior Scientist new methodologies and technical approaches.
  • Using established prescribed templates, prepares data analysis, modeling, written reports, maps, etc. as appropriate to support findings as it pertains to the natural or man‑made environment in the study area.
  • Reviews and evaluates technical reports and plans of scientific aspects of proposed projects for the environmental review of projects including permitting, and development of mitigation plans.
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports on the scientific aspects of the natural and man‑made environment to identify the effects of the construction and operation of transportation projects on the environment.
  • Provides technical advice and assistance to project engineers on specific geologic, hydrologic, biologic, or other scientific aspects and their impact on the specific phase of construction.
  • Reviews and evaluates the potential impact of federal, state, and local environmental legislation.
  • Coordinates with appropriate agencies and stakeholders to encourage cooperative management strategies, or to develop information and interpret findings.
  • Prepares and participates in public information meetings and hearings.
  • Keeps current with trends, literature and new developments in ecology and environmental science.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or Master's Degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 1 year of relevant experience
What You'll Bring:
  • Recognizes patterns, trends, and inconsistencies to understand how data relates to scientific principles and environmental conditions.
  • Researches scientific articles and trends to assess findings and relevance for environmental documentation and permits.
  • Assesses and compiles complex information from technical reports.
  • Teaches safety procedures and best practices in the field.
  • Understands established analytical methods.
What We Prefer:
  • Experience supporting environmental studies, permitting efforts, environmental compliance activities, or technical documentation for infrastructure, transportation, energy, water resources, or related projects.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and processes such as NEPA, environmental permitting, natural resource evaluations, cultural resource coordination, or agency consultation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, manage multiple assignments, and communicate technical information through written reports, presentations, or client interactions.
