Job summary

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Scientist II to join our EHS team for a seconded on-site Health & Safety Specialist role in Rancho Cordova, CA. This full-time position supports Health & Safety and Environmental Compliance in a research and development setting, contingent on client contract continuation.

The role requires a BA/BS in related sciences and 2 years of relevant experience, with a US driver’s license and US citizenship.

  • 2 years of relevant environmental health and safety experience or equivalent.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's license required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and support health, safety and environmental projects and programs, including planning, coordination, execution, and tracking of deliverables to ensure compliance and timely completion.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to evaluate compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations (air, water, waste, hazardous materials).
  • Review permits, plans, records, and monitoring data to verify adherence to regulatory requirements and permit conditions.
  • Identify violations, non-conformances, and environmental risks; document findings through clear inspection reports.
  • Investigate citizen complaints, spill reports, or alleged violations and determine corrective actions.
  • Communicate findings and compliance requirements to facility representatives; provide guidance on corrective measures.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders to support enforcement actions and inspections.
  • Maintain inspection records, databases, and tracking systems for documentation and reporting.
  • Interpret and apply regulations (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, EPCRA) to inspections.
  • Participate in compliance outreach, training sessions, or stakeholder meetings to promote environmental stewardship.
  • Interpret data and analyses to ensure regulatory compliance; work with minimal direction.

Job Description

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Scientist II to join our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team. We are seeking candidates to fill a seconded role as an on‑site Health & Safety Specialist for a program in Rancho Cordova, California. This full‑time position within our Environmental group will provide and coordinate support related to Health & Safety and Environmental Compliance in a research and development laboratory and office setting. The duration of this position will be contingent upon AECOM maintaining our contract with the client.

  • Interpret and apply relevant regulations (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, EPCRA) to inspection activities and compliance determinations.
  • Participate in compliance assistance outreach, training sessions, or stakeholder meetings to promote environmental stewardship and regulatory awareness.
  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance. Work is performed with minimal direction.
  • Performing complex assignments often requires the development of unique solutions to problems.
  • Participating in internal and client required calls.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • BA/BS in related sciences.
  • 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in supporting environmental projects related to health and safety and environmental compliance.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's license is required for this role.
  • Due to the nature of work, US citizenship is required.
  • Candidate must be able to meet medical clearance requirements of an OSHA (HAZWOPER) medical surveillance physical exam.
Preferred Qualification
  • 4+ years of relevant experience working on environmental projects related to health and safety and environmental compliance in California.
  • Previous experience with research and development laboratories.
  • Previous experience working as an environmental consultant.
  • OSHA 40‑hour HAZWOPER Training with annual 8‑hour refresher.

Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $74000 to $88000.
