Job description

Job Overview

This position supports utility projects by conducting environmental assessments—including stream and wetland delineation, habitat and species inventories, and environmental permitting—and by applying environmental principles to the siting of electric transmission lines and substations using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify the most viable opportunities.


Responsibilities


  • Conduct field environmental assessments in cleared and uncleared linear utility corridors and site‑specific parcels to delineate, GPS, and map streams, wetlands, habitat, and identify plant and animal species.

  • Prepare environmental and technical reports documenting assessment findings and supporting environmental protection, mitigation planning, and permitting.

  • Provide regulatory and permitting application support for NEPA, SEPA, Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other state and local environmental review authorities, coordinating with applicable agencies.

  • Support line and substation siting by applying environmental principles and analyzing environmental, land use, cultural resource, and visual issues.

  • Prepare estimates, budgets, and monitor project costs for environmental activities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


Qualifications


  • Regular attendance is required.

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree in natural sciences (e.g., biology, environmental sciences, ecology, forestry, soil science) or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline preferred.

  • 3–5 years of experience in natural resources and ecological consulting.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations


  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS)

  • Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS)

  • Certified Wildlife Biologist (CWB)

  • ASTM Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Training (or similar)

Physical Demands


  • Stand, walk, and sit for extended periods; frequent speaking or hearing; manual handling of tools and equipment; climbing, stooping, and reaching as needed.

  • Lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds; no lifts above 100 pounds.

  • Work primarily outdoors with frequent exposure to typical weather conditions.


Work Environment


  • Outdoor work with variable weather.

  • Occasional proximity to moving mechanical parts and electrical shock risk.

  • General office tasks such as report preparation and coordination.
