Job summary

Jacobs is seeking an Environmental Scientist to advance environmental site characterization and regulatory permitting for federal, state, and local projects in the Northeast corridor. The role blends field work with office tasks in a hybrid schedule.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or other related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with USACE and NJDEP environmental permitting related to wetlands, wildlife, and other regulated natural resources.
  • Minimum 7 years experience independently preparing federal, state, and local environmental permit applications for projects related to transportation, commercial, and/or energy sectors.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to work under inclement conditions.
  • 40-hr HAZWOPER certification or the ability to attain this certification.
  • United States Citizenship

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and coordinate federal, state, and local environmental permit applications for projects.
  • Engage with regulatory agencies (USACE, NJDEP, etc.) throughout permitting processes.
  • Manage projects or assist project management and mentor junior staff.
  • Maintain safety and environmental compliance standards on all field and office activities.
  • Split time between field sites (approx. 50%) and hybrid office work (approx. 50%).

Based out of New York City, NY; Morristown, NJ, Clarke, NJ, or Philadelphia, PA you’ll work on the preparation of federal, state, and local environmental permit applications (USACE, USFWS, NJDEP, CAFRA, Waterfront Development, Flood Hazard Area, Freshwater Wetlands); natural resources assessments including wetland delineations, habitat assessments, protected wildlife surveys, etc.; coordination with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies; project management or assistant project management; mentoring of junior staff.

Estimated approximately 50% of your time will be spent on field project work (on job sites) and the other 50% of your time will consist of office work that will be completed in a Hybrid work environment (you’ll be afforded the flexibility to work from both the office as well as from home as best suited to meet project delivery goals while maintaining balance).

Here’s what you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or other related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with USACE and NJDEP environmental permitting related to wetlands, wildlife, and other regulated natural resources
  • Minimum 7 years experience independently preparing federal, state, and local environmental permit applications for projects related to transportation, commercial, and/or energy sectors
  • Ability to work independently
  • Willingness to work under inclement conditions
  • Demonstrated competency with wetland delineations per methodology within the USACE Wetland Delineation Handbook and applicable regional supplements for NJ and NY, as well as the 1989 Federal Interagency Wetland Delineation Manual
  • 40-hr HAZWOPER certification or the ability to attain this certification
  • United States Citizenship
Ideally, you will also have
  • Masters degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or other related discipline
  • PWS certification
  • Direct experience with NJDOT and/or NJTPA
  • Experience with linear development projects (natural gas/oil/water pipeline, electric transmission)
  • USFWS qualified bog turtle surveyor
  • Additional state or federal wildlife permits/quals

The base salary range for this position is $98,900.00 to $176,000.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
