Job summary

Smith & Wesson is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety professional in Maryville, TN to ensure compliance with EH&S regulations and to implement programs across locations.

Responsibilities include managing hazardous waste, serving as safety officer, conducting risk assessments, and coordinating incident responses. Requires a Bachelor’s in OHS or related field with 4–6 years of manufacturing EH&S experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety or similar field.
  • 4-6 years EH&S experience, preferably in manufacturing.
  • Experience with risk management carriers preferred.
  • Experience with fire department and building code regulations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Company's back-up radiation and laser safety officer and conduct related activities.
  • Manage and maintain all technical and tactical aspects of the Hazardous Waste Program.
  • Collect wastewater and storm water samples and complete reporting requirements.
  • Maintain the SDS database for Maryville and support other locations as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with EH&S programs, policies and procedures across locations.
  • Conduct EH&S inspections and program audits.
  • Investigate work-related incidents and document non-conformances.

Job description

Responsible for ensuring Smith & Wesson's compliance with all applicable Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations and requirements; ensuring successful implementation and integration of all EH&S programs.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety or similar field
  • 4-6 years of EH&S experience, preferably working in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in facilities/maintenance preferred
  • Experience with risk management carriers preferred
  • Experience with fire department and building code regulations preferred
Competencies and Skills:
  • Working knowledge of 40 CFR 260-279: Hazardous Waste
  • Working knowledge of 29 CFR 1910.32: Personal Protective Equipment
  • Working knowledge of electronic and mechanical operations and applications in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of industrial hygiene studies and testing proceduresStrong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to complete projects as assigned in a timely manner
  • Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (basic verbal instructions, simple written memos and instructions)
  • Intermediate computer skills required -- Microsoft Office applications
  • Proven ability to identify, investigate, correct, and document potential environmental, health and safety non-conformances.
  • Ability to acquire EH&S certifications as necessary
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serving as the Company's back-up radiation and laser safety officer and conducting all related activities

  • Conducting EH&S inspections and program audits
  • Conducting risk hazard assessments and implementing recommended controls
  • Investigating work related accidents, incidents, compliance events and serious near misses
  • Purchasing and maintaining safety and environmental supplies
  • Providing EH&S support to other locations as requested
  • Providing 24-hr access and availability for incident response
  • Responding to EH&S concerns raised by employees
  • Conducting new hire orientation and other EH&S trainings as necessary
  • Helping the department to reach all Company EH&S goals and objectives

Physical Demands:
  • Works in office and manufacturing environments
  • Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, squat and walk

  • Any BCSP Accreditations
Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.
  • The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:
  • Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor
  • The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
