At VHB, we provide comprehensive environmental services to private developers, municipalities, transportation agencies, airports and energy firms. Our work integrates technical analysis, long-term planning, and environmental permitting strategies to not only meet regulatory standards but also advance sustainability goals and improve the built environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage project budgets, track financial performance, and oversee invoicing
  • Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams to advance projects
  • Prepare, review, and manage technical documentation, including Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA), and permitting applications
  • Support proposal development, including budgeting, staffing estimates, and planning strategy
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory changes, policies, and legislation impacting projects
  • Lead and manage planning studies, feasibility analyses, reuse and redevelopment master plans, and project assessments
  • Conduct project-level needs assessments and site evaluations, including zoning and environmental constraints
  • Ensure project compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including NEPA and SEQRA requirements
  • Coordinate data collection and analysis related to economic, social, and physical land use factors
  • Research and interpret zoning codes, land use regulations, and policy frameworks
  • Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior staff for technical accuracy and quality
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to stakeholders, agencies, and the public
  • Lead public outreach efforts, including meetings, workshops, and community engagement activities
  • Serve as liaison to advisory boards, elected officials, and planning and zoning committees
  • Conduct research and analysis on demographic, economic, and environmental variables
  • Develop and maintain project‑related databases and planning tools
  • Represent VHB at industry events, conferences, and professional organizations
Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong project and client management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong understanding of planning principles, research methods, and data analysis techniques
  • Familiarity with transportation agencies and State DOTs (preferred)
  • Knowledge of land use planning, transportation, aviation, or related specialization areas
  • Experience with innovative planning approaches such as smart growth, new urbanism, and sustainability initiatives
  • Proficiency in GIS (a plus)
  • Ability to apply statistical and analytical methods to real‑world planning challenges
  • Effective communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Collaborative, team‑oriented mindset with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning or a related field (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Regional Planning, Sustainability, Economics, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in planning, environmental review, or regulatory compliance
  • Demonstrated experience with NEPA and SEQRA processes, particularly related to permitting and entitlements
  • Master’s degree in a related field (preferred)
