Job description

ERM is hiring Environmental Permitting Specialists to support key client operations in Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo, NY. The role holder will manage environmental licensing and permitting activities for electric and gas projects, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental requirements from project initiation through design and construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Review electric, gas, and facility capital improvement projects and facility modifications to evaluate potential environmental impacts and determine regulatory permit needs.
• Oversee clients’ field operations, including the management and documentation of site visits to monitor and facilitate compliance with applicable local, state, federal, and company requirements.
• Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding current and proposed federal, state, and local regulations and the client’s Environmental Procedures to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and regulations.
• Train and motivate engineering and corporate-based personnel to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations and the client’s Environmental Procedures; provide technical guidance, support, and coaching to develop technical understanding of environmental requirements.
• Successfully manage permitting within project schedules.
• Review and manage environmental aspects of projects during design and construction.

Successful candidates will

• Effectively communicate with peers and regulators.
• Work independently, manage priorities, and organize workloads with moderate guidance.
• Build strong working relationships with Operations, Engineering, Project Management, Construction, Legal, Real Estate, Safety, and other personnel to share best practice and communicate business decisions.
• Manage high work volumes and apply sound problem‑solving skills to obtain, research, and analyze data; draw inferences; and make recommendations to the client’s personnel and service providers.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental/civil engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in permitting, preferably related to electric and/or gas utility projects.
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards, and legislation.
• Extensive knowledge of environmental licensing and permitting regulatory requirements.
• Project management experience.
• Familiarity with GIS.

Pay Transparency

For the Environmental Permitting Specialists position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $81,710 – $108,285 ($39.28 hr – $52.06 hr) USD. This is a limited‑term, non‑exempt role. Pay is based on education, experience, geographic location, and other factors. Salary may be outside the range based on the same factors. This role may be eligible for bonus pay; casual and fixed‑term/Flexforce employees are not bonus eligible.
