Job summary

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection in Portland is seeking two Environmental Licensing Specialist II professionals. You will review development proposals, draft permitting decisions, and coordinate with state and federal agencies. Some remote work may be available with management approval.

Opening date Oct 26, 2026; closing date Nov 13, 2026. Salary is hourly, with step-based increases from $27.34 to $38.34 per hour. This is a full-time, year-round position based in Portland.

Qualifications

Intermediate education, training or experience in environmental science or related field with ability to analyze permits and technical information.
Experience with regulatory programs at federal/state/local level preferred.
Strong writing and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

Review development proposals to ensure compliance with Maine environmental laws and regulations.
Draft permitting decisions and recommend approval or denial of permit applications.
Lead coordination with state agencies, attend meetings, and participate in public hearings as needed.
