Jobbeschreibung

We’re hiring and training Canvass Directors to make an impact on some of the most important problems of our time — like protecting wildlife and wild places, eliminating plastic waste that is polluting our oceans, ensuring we have clean air to breathe and clean water to drink, and more. Having policy solutions to these problems often isn’t enough to make the changes we need. To win positive change, we need to educate, engage and mobilize people across the country to support those solutions.

We’re hiring Canvass Directors to build the people power it takes to tackle these problems and win. Directors and their staff work to build public support through one-on-one, face-to-face conversations on America’s front doorsteps, generating the kind of support that lasts longer than a news cycle and goes deeper than an online petition. This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance. We have immediate positions available as well as positions starting throughout the year.

Apply to work with us if you want to:
  • Educate and engage the public on campaigns like protecting forests and the wildlife that depend on them, moving beyond single-use plastics and stopping electronic waste.
  • Build support and fundraise for leading nonprofit groups working on these issues, including Environment America and PIRG.
  • Hire, train and manage your own team.
  • Work at the most effective citizen outreach operation in the country. We have raised over $700 million for environmental and public interest organizations, run hundreds of campaigns in all 50 states, and educated and mobilized millions of people on important issues.
Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have leadership experience and potential, excellent communication skills, and who want to work hard to make lasting, positive change on important issues. Being a Canvass Director requires that you work independently, exercise good judgment and work hard to meet your office’s staffing, campaign and fieldwork goals.

Training

We have an excellent training program, which starts with working in an existing canvass office to get hands‑on training, as well as classroom‑style training on social change concepts and skills.

Throughout the year, new and experienced Canvass Directors may participate in advanced trainings on staff management, canvassing, campaign strategy and other skills.

Locations

We work on campaigns and in locations that we think will make the biggest difference. We are looking for Canvass Directors who are ready to go where they’re needed most and wherever they can make the biggest impact. Canvass Directors could work on campaigns almost anywhere in the country, and while location preferences are considered for placements, we require all directors to be geographically flexible. Right now we are running campaigns in California, Colorado, D.C., Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington state and Wisconsin.

Pay and Benefits

The target annual compensation for this position is $40,000-$53,750, depending on position and location. The Fund offers an excellent benefits package.

  • medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents
  • paid sick time (60-80 hours/year depending on location)
  • vacation time (accruing 10 days over year 1, 15 days over year 2, and 20 days over year 3 and thereafter)
  • a commuter benefit program
  • a 401(k) plan with employer match
  • parental leave
  • long term disability insurance
  • may include needs‑based student loan assistance
  • We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

About Fund for the Public Interest

The Fund’s mission is to build public support to tackle some of America’s toughest problems. At a time when people spend so much of their lives facing screens, the Fund's citizen outreach team builds public support face-to-face, person-to-person for important issues. And it works. For more than 40 years, we've won support for reducing plastic waste, saving endangered wildlife, keeping toxic pollution out of our air and water, and more.

As part of The Public Interest Network, we represent some of the nation’s most effective advocacy groups, including PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) and Environment America. Starting with our door-to-door canvass, and following up through the mail, by phone and online, we build lasting support for positive action and change.
