Environmental Laboratory Technical Manager

Location: Sunnyvale, CA

Job Summary / Objective

KETOS is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Laboratory Technical Manager to lead the technical operations of our newly established laboratory. This is a unique opportunity to build and shape a cutting‑edge environmental testing facility from the ground up. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in environmental analysis, proven leadership skills, and a passion for quality and efficiency. You will be responsible for ensuring the laboratory’s compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, as well as driving continuous improvement in laboratory processes and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Operations Management:
    • Oversee the day‑to‑day technical operations of the environmental laboratory, including sample receipt, preparation, analysis, and data reporting.
    • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory processes.
    • Ensure the accurate and timely completion of analytical testing and reporting.
    • Manage laboratory inventory, equipment maintenance, and calibration.
    • Troubleshoot technical issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC):
    • Establish and maintain a robust QA/QC program to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analytical data.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements (e.g., EPA, state, and local regulations).
    • Manage laboratory accreditations and certifications (e.g., NELAC/TNI).
    • Conduct internal audits and participate in external audits.
    • Maintain detailed records of QA/QC activities.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory staff.
    • Train and mentor laboratory technicians on analytical methods and procedures.
    • Stay current with advancements in environmental analytical techniques and technologies.
    • Evaluate and implement new analytical methods and equipment.
    • Oversee method validation.
  • Safety:
    • Ensure all laboratory safety protocols are followed.
    • Maintain a safe working environment.
    • Oversee proper disposal of chemical waste.
  • Client Interaction:
    • Answer technical questions from clients.
    • Assist in the preparation of proposals and reports.
    • Maintain strong client relationships.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, natural or physical science, environmental engineering, sanitary engineering, or chemical engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the analysis of chemical, biological, or microbiological samples in an environmental laboratory.
  • Familiarity with ELAP and NELAP standards and requirements.
  • Strong understanding of environmental analytical methods and QA/QC principles.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental analytical methods and techniques (e.g., GC/MS, LC/MS, ICP, etc.).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Experience with laboratory accreditation processes.
  • Experience with method validation.
