The Franklin County Health Department seeks an Environmental Health Supervisor II to lead a team of specialists in safeguarding community health. Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of physical or biological sciences and three years of professional environmental health work, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be registered as a Sanitarian by the NC State Board of Sanitarian Examiners.
  • Must have a valid NC driver's license with a good driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee On-site Water Program (OSW), Food & Lodging, pool inspections, and Child Environmental Health programs.
  • Provide oversight to four OSW staff, one Food & Lodging staff member, two clerical staff, and report to Local Health Director.
  • Review OSW design proposals and ensure quality assurance across OSW activities.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of environmental health practices and program development.

Responsibilities

This position provides oversight for the On-site Water Program (OSW), food and lodging programs, pool inspections, Child environmental Health (etc.), along with responsibilities in other Environmental Health programs. Responsibilities in the OSW program include assisting OSW staff on difficult sites/situations, review of technical OSW design proposals, quality assurance for the OSW program. This position provides oversight to four OSW staff members, a Food and Lodging staff member, two clerical staff members and reports to the Local Health Director. The work schedule is typically Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Work schedule may change due to; public health emergencies, providing required services outside of normal business hours, and/or during exceptionally high-volume permit request.Considerable knowledge of microbiology, biology, chemistry, food science, epidemiology, soil science, entomology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices. General knowledge of community resources. General knowledge of the responsibilities of other agencies relating to environmental health. General knowledge of the interrelationship between socio-economic factors and environmental health concerns. Considerable knowledge of the design of on-site wastewater treatment systems, protection of water supplies, food sanitation, food borne diseases, communicable diseases, vector control, solid waste management, and institutional sanitation. Considerable knowledge of inspection methods and investigation techniques as applied in environmental health. Basic knowledge of office administrative management practices, including personnel policies and procedures. Strong knowledge of department/county budgetary processes. Ability to: analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records, and reports; exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing public health laws and regulations; motivate and educate business and property owners and the consumer public in matters relating to protecting and promoting public health; present formal environmental health training program; develop and express ideas and opinions concisely, comprehensively, and clearly in oral and written form, independently plan and schedule work activities; apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems; independently plan, develop, and implement a growing environmental health program; establish and maintain working relationships with public and private groups; and to assess the need for and promote programs to meet community environmental health needs. Strong Computer skills required. Public Speaking experience required. Prior exposure to the CDP application is a plus.

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of course work in the physical or biological sciences and three years of experience in professional environmental health work at the Sanitarian level or above in a health department, with one year preferably having been in an administrative, management, or supervisory capacity.
  • Must be registered as a Sanitarian by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners.
  • Must have a valid NC driver's license with a good driving record.
