Job summary

Douglas County Government is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist I to join our team in Colorado. This role conducts inspections and investigations to enforce local and state health codes, with program assignments across retail food, childcares, body art, onsite wastewater, pools, tires, and landfills.

A degree in Environmental Health and licensure requirements apply. The position emphasizes sound judgment, strong communication, and service orientation, with a salary range and benefits

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or related field is required.
  • One year of professional experience in a related program, or four years of professional experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with compliant insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs inspections and investigations of public and private establishments to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety codes.
  • Works in an assigned program area (retail food establishments, childcares, body art facilities, or onsite wastewater, pools, tires, and landfills) as needed.
  • Reviews environmental records and prepares documentation for compliance, enforcement, and reporting.
  • Contributes to the public health mission by applying sound judgment and strong communication with stakeholders.

As part of the Douglas County Environmental Health team, the Environmental Health Specialist I performs inspections and investigations of public and private establishments and other environmental situations to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety codes. Working assigned program to include either retail food establishments, childcares, and body art facilities, or Onsite Waste Treatment Systems (septics), swimming pools, waste tires and landfills, environmental record reviews.

We are looking for someone who brings sound judgment, strong communication skills, attention to detail and a service-oriented approach. The ideal candidate will have an a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Environmental Health, or a related field, one year of professional experience in a related program; or in lieu of bachelor’s degree, incumbent must have four years of professional experience in a related program. A combination of experience and education may be considered. Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance.

In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
