Job summary

Environmental Health Specialist
Markleeville, CA | Alpine County Health and Human Services
Full-time, benefited position
Salary Range 48B: $36.49 - $44.36/hour

Under direction, performs a variety of routine to complex professional duties related to the inspection, enforcement, and oversight of County environmental health programs including but not limited to consumer protection, drinking water sanitation, solid waste disposal, wastewater disposal, land use, and hazardous materials; interprets and enforces federal, state, and local statutes as they pertain to environmental management programs; promotes public health through inspection, permitting and enforcement; provides education, technical consultations, and assistance to County staff, outside agencies, and the public; assists with planning and implementing new or specialized programs and obtaining grant funding; and performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental health, public health, industrial hygiene, or a related field.

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the inspection and enforcement of public health, environmental laws, and hazardous materials laws.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a valid registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California, to be maintained throughout employment.

Must possess a valid US drivers license upon date of application.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: 100% FTE in a five-step salary system with advancement upon satisfactory completion of a 12-month probationary period and annual increases thereafter.

Health Insurance: County provides medical, dental and vision coverage for employee and dependents with co-payment by employee dependent on family status.

Vacation: Accrued at the rate of 6.67 hours per month, or 10 vacation days per year.

Sick Leave: Earned at the rate of 8 hours per month.

Holidays: 15 paid holidays per year.

Retirement: Participation in the California Public Employee Retirement System (PERS), 2% at 62 plan for New Members

Deferred Compensation: the County has a voluntary deferred compensation program.
