Position: Environmental, Health, Safety Manager

SUMMARY:

To provide leadership and oversight for Health Safety Environment & Facilities (HSE&F) by establishing strong working relationships with site leadership team and the employees. Key leader with the business directing sustainable health and safety programs through incorporation of impactful operating processes and keeping in front of leading practices in health and safety standards. Organizes and controls the safety & emergency response functions at the plants to ensure an effective training for accident prevention and emergency response program is maintained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implements and communicates HSE&F standards
  • Develop and maintain all current written safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Measures key HSE&F metrics
  • Conducts periodic inspections of plant machinery, equipment and working conditions to ensure conformance with HSE&F standards and regulations.
  • Observes workers and work practices to ensure that safety devices and safe work practices are used.
  • Provides technical HSE&F assistance.
  • Collaborates with other leaders to implement processes and technologies that reduce the organization’s carbon footprint.
  • Researches and analyzes processes with an eye towards sustainable improvements.
  • Manage the First Responders team to ensure compliance with its organizational statement
  • Coordinates activities with industrial hygiene personnel to maintain safe procedures involving toxic fumes, explosive air mixtures, and other hazardous circumstances that may be present and cannot reasonably be eliminated.
  • Audit on a regular basis, the availability and condition of firefighting, emergency response and safety equipment. Coordinates efforts to make corrections with plant management
  • Coordinates activities of training personnel and production management to ensure new or repeat training required by regulations is performed correctly, consistently, and on time to meet government mandated requirements
  • Audits accident and/or emergency incident reports for accuracy and follow up in correction of problems.
  • Coordinates medical recommendations with production management to reduce lost time and maximize use of personnel with work restrictions
  • Ensures investigations of accidents, fires, and chemical spills are completed on a timely basis
  • Compile emergency response data, statistics, and information required by governmental agencies for health, safety and environmental reports, inspections, or projects
  • Participates in OSHA, local fire department, insurance carrier, and regulatory body audits
  • Provides training for industrial vehicle operators, hoist operators, LOTO, respirator usage and respirator fit testing
  • Contributes to a team effort by proactively assisting internal contacts.
  • Attends training programs to develop relevant knowledge, techniques and skills.
  • Maintains and protects proprietary information as it relates to the company and customers.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Some overnight travel by various modes of transportation including airline, train, and automobile as deemed appropriate
  • Able to work extended hours and off hours as required

  • Ability to work with extremely confidential information/situations while maintaining confidentiality
  • Working knowledge of hazardous materials response
  • Working knowledge of OSHA & NFPA rules and regulations
  • Familiarity with fire alarm systems and fire suppression systems.
  • Ability to deal with outside vendors and contractors to effect repairs and adjustments to facility systems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Science, Engineering.
  • Record of progressive HS&E experience
  • Certification as a Medical Responder or Emergency Medical Technician preferred
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license for business travel purposes

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write and speak English. Must be able to read and understand materials such as SDS and other OSHA requirements. This position requires a candidate to express or exchange ideas, convey important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fraction, and decimals. Must be able to prepare and analyze data, with frequent transcribing and viewing of a computer terminal, with extensive reading.

REASONING ABILITY: To read and decipher technical jargon and communicate in layman’s terms so that operations employees understand.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The candidate must pass a company pre-employment drug screen prior to commencing work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will spend time in the plant for sustained periods of time. There is occasional exposure to elements such as odor, noise, dust, heat, cold or chemicals. The employee is required to sit, stand, and walk throughout the workday. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must have full range of body motion.

The employee will be required to use all personal protective equipment provided by the company in compliance with OSHA regulations.
