Job summary

The City of Baltimore seeks an Environmental Sanitarian I to assist in environmental health investigations and enforcement. You will work under close supervision, conduct inspections at various sites, and prepare detailed narrative reports.

The role requires evening and weekend hours and on-call readiness for emergencies in a hands-on, field-based environment. Ideal candidates have foundational knowledge in biosciences, strong communication skills, and the ability to navigate computer systems

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 30+ semester hours in physical, biological, or environmental science, plus lab coursework and math course requirements.
• Equivalent education/experience acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Environmental Sanitarians.
• Must possess a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license and be eligible for a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
• Must obtain Maryland Lead Paint Technician accreditation within 6 months of hire and Lead Paint Risk Assessor accreditation within 18 months.

Responsibilities

• Investigate environmental health conditions at investigation sites.
• Issue violation notices and civil/environmental citations.
• Maintain records and prepare detailed narrative reports of investigations.
• Evaluate findings to determine code violations and prepare testimony as needed.
