Toole Design Group in Pittsburgh, PA is looking to hire a talented full-time Environmental Graphic Designer II. Do you have a strong background in graphic design with a passion for improving the built environment? Would you like to work for a firm that is committed to the well‑being of its employees? Then we are looking for you to be an integral part of the office where you'll find an integrated team that realizes design excellence, quality, and innovation.

This Environmental Graphic Designer II position with a focus on project management for public realm and active transportation wayfinding earns a competitive salary and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement, a health savings account (HSA), and a flexible spending account (FSA). We practice what we preach and ensure that our employees also have access to transportation by providing them with financial incentives to bike, walk, or use transit for a better quality of life.

About Toole Design

Toole Design is the leading planning, design, and engineering firm specializing in multimodal transportation. Since our start in 2003 as a single office in Maryland, we have expanded throughout the United States and Canada. Our talented team of planners, urban designers, landscape architects, and engineers are committed to delivering quality work that meets the needs of all people, regardless of age, ability, race, or gender. We have been named a "best firm to work for" and have one of the lowest staff turnover rates in the industry.

Every project our employees deliver directly and positively affects our communities. We are industry-leading experts, and we work hard to encourage a collaborative and team‑oriented environment.

A Day in the Life of an Environmental Graphic Designer II

As an Environmental Graphic Designer at Toole, you will be a part of our growing Graphic Design team, working collaboratively with urban designers, landscape architects, planners, and engineers to help users successfully engage with the built environment. You will bridge the gap between 2D and 3D design, using your knowledge of visual communication to help users understand and navigate their environments successfully, as well as helping public clients envision possibilities for their streets, trails, and transit stations. This role is primarily focused on wayfinding for bicycle networks, walkable urban districts, parks, and transit stations, with a possibility to help grow our work in placemaking more generally. You will have the opportunity to work on stakeholder outreach and design workshops, concept plans, design guidelines, wayfinding strategies, branding, signage, and map design, including deliverables ranging from presentations and reports to design intent documents and final artwork. Depending on workload and the selected candidate’s skillset, this role may also support more general graphic design or visualization deliverables such as report design, engagement materials, or renderings. We are looking for someone who can lead the design of standalone wayfinding projects, or lead EGD tasks within larger trails and urban design projects.

The Graphic Design team is currently distributed across our Portland, Seattle, Madison, Minneapolis, Raleigh, and Los Angeles offices. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across Toole Design’s 19 offices across the US, with emphasis on projects located in their region.

Salary Range

We are targeting a salary range of $67,000 to $76,000 for this position with flexibility for well-qualified candidates.

Work Schedule for an Environmental Graphic Designer II

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week and will work from our office location Tuesdays through Thursday. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2 days per week. The Pittsburgh office of Toole Design is conveniently located in Market Square, in the heart of Downtown. It is blocks from multiple bus routes, on the future BRT route, and near the Wood Street T stop. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
