Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Geologist to support Environmental projects, primarily on Federal initiatives. Responsibilities include field sampling, data collection, and oversight of subcontractors, with travel across the US.

The candidate should have a Geology or related degree and 4+ years of experience, with HAZWOPER training and strong report-writing skills. This is a hybrid role based in Providence, RI.

Qualifications

  • HAZWOPER training is required or preferred.
  • Experience with field sampling and data collection processes.
  • Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.
  • Ability to communicate with regulatory officials and clients clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Develop solutions for technical problems using basic scientific principles.
  • Collect soil, soil vapor, groundwater samples with field equipment.
  • Explain observations using chemistry, physics, biology, hydrology and math.
  • Oversee subcontractors and laboratories involved in sampling.
  • Study contaminants and remediation strategies.
  • Prepare data and scientific documents.
  • Demonstrate technical report writing capabilities.
  • Perform unsupervised field tasks and direct staff.
  • Coordinate with project managers and field staff on sampling and documentation.
  • Provide technical expertise support to environmental investigations.
  • Learn hazard recognition and environmental investigation concepts.
  • Travel to various US job sites.
  • Work on diverse projects with a focus on safety.

Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Geologist to support the Environmental business line, primarily working on Federal projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizes basic scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope.
  • Apply standard field practices and techniques using basic field equipment to collect samples of soil, soil vapor, groundwater, surface water, sediment; prepare samples for shipping, and complete chain-of-custody or similar paperwork.
  • Apply knowledge of natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, hydrology, and mathematics) to explain observations.
  • Conduct oversight of subcontractors including laboratories and excavation and drilling companies.
  • Study contaminants and determine how to restore the environment.
  • Prepare basic data and scientific documents.
  • Possess technical report writing skills.
  • Performs unsupervised field tasks.
  • Direct staff in the execution of tasks.
  • Coordination with task and project managers, working with on-site subcontractors and field staff, supporting sampling, data collection, and field documentation.
  • Provide technical expertise support.
  • Learn and develop a keen understanding of hazard recognition; and environmental investigation or remediation.
  • Travel to various job sites within the US
  • Flexibility to work on a multitude of diverse projects, a positive attitude, and commitment to workplace health and safety
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Engineering or other related discipline (e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, environmental geology, engineering geology) + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license required. Subject to Motor Vehicle Records check.
  • Due to the nature of the work, U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Candidate must be able to pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check to obtain U.S. Federal Government Credentials.
  • Candidate must be able to meet the medical clearance requirements of an OSHA (HAZWOPER) medical surveillance physical examination.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in geology, hydrogeology or other related discipline (e.g., geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry, environmental geology, engineering geology).
  • Professional registration or track to obtain professional registration.
  • Experience with developing conceptual site models, and preparing remediation strategies
  • Proficiency in standard office suite software applications.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete 40 hour HAZWOPER training, OSHA 30-Hour Training for Construction and General Industry, and annual 8 hour refresher class. Currently trained is a plus.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional demeanor in written and verbal communications with clients, regulatory officials, and fellow employees.
  • Ability to write and to convey complex thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise manner. Ability to learn through on-the-job experience.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs of sampling equipment and coolers, with assistance up to 90% of the time.
  • Safely drive and operate a full-size pickup truck.
  • Be medically fit for wearing a respirator.
  • Able to work in variable climate conditions including heat, snow, cold, wind, etc.
