Job summary

Steel Dynamics is offering an Environmental Engineering Internship in its Butler, IN facility. The role embeds interns in an active manufacturing environment, linking environmental work to real operational decisions and sustainability goals.

Interns will gain mentorship, engage with operations and leadership, and contribute to air, water, waste, and permitting initiatives while building a strong professional network and practical EMS experience.

Qualifications

• Clear communication and organized documentation skills to collaborate with operations and support compliance reporting
• Minimum GPA of 2.7
• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Chemical, or Civil Engineering with environmental emphasis

Responsibilities

• Support the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System across air, water, stormwater, waste, and radiation programs
• Assist with environmental permitting by data gathering, submittals, and coordinating with consultants
• Collect and analyze environmental data for emissions, water quality, and waste streams
• Conduct field inspections of emission points, stormwater controls, and radiation portals; document findings and follow up on actions
• Perform sampling and monitoring to verify permit conditions and maintain chain of custody
• Prepare regulatory reports including emission inventories, Title V, and Tier II submissions
• Assist with audits, walk-throughs, and responses to findings
• Develop training materials for environmental requirements and partner with Corporate on projects
