Job summary

Billerud NA offers a cooperative engineering program in Michigan aimed at developing future environmental engineers. You will work with Environmental and Sustainability teams to support compliance, optimize systems, and contribute to sustainable initiatives.

The program emphasizes hands‑on experience, cross‑functional collaboration, and potential full‑time opportunities after completion. A strong GPA and reliance on your communication skills are valued as you rotate through the mill operations.

Qualifications

  • EH&S curriculum with interest in Environmental, Waste, or Soil Management (minimum GPA 2.75).
  • Must have completed three college semesters before Co-op start date.
  • Must be available for one of two rotations (Jan–Aug or May–Dec).

Responsibilities

  • Provide environmental support for Environmental compliance and treatment plant operations.
  • Monitor, assess, analyze, and optimize environmental systems.
  • Assist with creating and performing treatment plant LOTO’s and confined space entries.
  • Reduce environmental impact and support sustainability initiatives.
  • Provide environmental support for key departments.
  • Utilize problem solving and analytical skills to achieve department initiatives.

The goal of Billerud’s co‑op program is to cultivate the development of potential future engineering and leadership resources for our organization while providing high‑quality process support to the mill’s operations group(s). Co‑op assignments are structured to provide candidates with opportunities to grow and develop in their chosen discipline as well as educate them on various career paths within the organization. Although there is no guarantee of future employment, our goal is to have our Co‑ops fully capable of stepping into a full‑time engineering position within our organization by the end of the program. The Environmental Engineering Co‑op will work with the Environmental and Sustainability teams.

Key Accountabilities

Required Experience And Education
  • EH&S curriculum with an interest in Environmental, Waste, or Soil Management
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA
  • Must have completed three semesters of college education prior to Co‑op start date
  • Must be available to work one of two Co‑op rotations which run either January through August or May through December
Required Skills
  • Must possess strong communication and teamwork skills, with a desire to learn in a work environment that is modeled after a full‑time engineering experience
